Monumento a Mario Cermenati

Reviewed By Y8808JGdavidt - Christchurch, New Zealand

A striking statue in the middle of the plaza in the busy lakefront area of Lecco. There is no plaque and his Wikipedia article appears only in Italian. He was a prominent politician in the very early 1900s who was bold enough to encourage the “radical” separation of church and state; an “anticlerical”. Cermenati became a deputy in 1909. He was in government from 1917 to 1920. He was a key member of many government offices including president of the Italian Geological Society. This plaza was named after him in 1927. The bronze monument originated in 1943 and is mounted a very natural-looking, granite pedestal.
