Great Sphinx

At over 240 feet long and 66 feet high, it’s a wonder that this mysterious sculpture was carved from a solid limestone block.

The Sphinx of Memphis

This impressive monument, carved in honor of an unknown Pharaoh during the 18th Dynasty, is 26 feet long, 13 feet tall and weighs approximately 90 tons.

Reviewed By JMcD202003 - Fishers, United States

As part of our overall tour, we visited the ancient capital of Egypt at Memphis. Although there did not appear to be much in the way of temples or historical sites (the current town probably sits over most of the former site), we did visit the place where there is the Alabaster Sphinx. This is very impressive and still in very good condition. Another item at this location which to me was even more impressive was the lying down statue of Ramses II. Although the bottom portion of both legs is missing, the quality of the sculpture of this famous Pharaoh is one of the best in Egypt. It is made of red granite, highly polished, and is extremely well done. It is so large, you must go up the stairs to a viewing area that looks down onto the statue, The statue and sphinx are a "must-see" for any tour and can be combined with a visit to the step pyramid at "Saqqara".

Statue of Ramses II

Pharaoh Ramses II statue has stood in a square outside Cairo's main railway station for 50 years. The statue is is 3,200 years old and weighs 83 tons.

Reviewed By DEK_29 - Brisbane, Australia

This colossal statue of Ramses II has been laying in its building for many years while its companion which stood at Midan Ramses has been moved to the new Greater Egyptian Museum where it received some needed cleaning and restoration. Meanwhile, this statue has seen many visitors and is the highlight at Mit Rahina. The craftsmanship in creating this work can be seen in the way the sculptors gave definition to the muscles of the arms and the upper legs. A good wander around this statue at ground level and the viewing platform does't take long but it is well worth the effort of a visit.

Gebel al Ingleez

You can walk/climb to the Gebel al Ingleez, north-east of Bawiti. At the flat top are the remains of a castle from the first world war, built by captain Williams to control the area. From the top, but also half way, you have a nice view at the surrounding mountaineous and bare area.

Mit Rahina Museum

This massive statue carved in limestone is more than 33 feet long and is located in the museum built to protect it.

Abt 1 hour drive from Cairo the journey through rural Egypt alone is worth it. You can see farmers driving their donkey carts full of vegetable and bread to the market. The muzeum has a lot of interesting artefacts with Ramases giant statue and the alabaster sphinx being the main attractions. Get there early in the morning before it gets hot and crowded.
