We were very lucky to be the first visitors of the day (Saturday morning, despite tripadvisor said it was closed..) We had a private tour by the friendly guardian, who came to open the gate and went on accompanying us up to the top describing the “musical” features of the lighthouse, its history and the sights. The unique construction of the lighthouse makes it perfect to propagate sounds and it’s used for in promptu concerts . Worth a try of your vocal cords!

We loved this windswept point in western Iceland in the shadow of Snaefellsjoekull, the tallest mountain in Iceland. The ocean is rough as it bashes the ancient lava and the sound of the waves flowing back into the ocean through the black gravel beach is mesmerizing.

I wanted to visit Svörtuloft, also called Skálasnagaviti during my drive of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The drive there was somewhat rough and bumpy and I was glad I had a car with higher ground clearance, although there were several smaller cars that also braved the access road. The lighthouse is painted a bright orange and looks great against the lava field and the ocean background. I was lucky with the weather and saw it in beautiful sunshine. There are also a table and benches for a picknick. Well worth the detour if you have a sturdy car and/or don't mind the bumpy road.
