Paqueta Island is one wonderfull place to visit and know.
Less than an hour away from Rio, one reaches Paquetá island by ferry from Praça XV for less than 7 reais; timetable can easily be found on the CCR Barcas page. One can walk around the whole island with no fear whatsoever, to enjoy a feeling of Brazilian's countryside despite being so near a metropolis and with calm waters all around; not all beaches are clean enough for swimming. Some restaurants and even guesthouses are there, allow yourself to 'get lost' on the island as a break from Rio, a real must!!
