Lamp no Yado fell short of our expectations. We didn't feel its no electricity is extraordinary/uniqueness of traditional Japanese onsen. Out Of four facilities, only one with waterfall view is standout. Unlike other ryokan, no shampoo and cool water provided so you have to prewash using hot water only. On top, no futon turndown service. You have to arrange on your own. Room 103 is tiny which it is acceptable by Japanese standard but the bad part was the loud walking noise from the room upstair given its wooden floor and I was certain that westerner guests won't be familiar with. Foods were just basic and small portion. Unlike other full service ryokans, they didn't wait till you show up and serve but most of the set menu were on the table (of course cold except the hotpot). Rice, miso and drink were self-service. So limited interaction with its staffs indeed.

This is a really cozy & gorgeous ryokan located in the countryside. Lovely owners Ranko & her mom made us feel right at home the moment we stepped in. We were on half-board stay & the meals cooked were hearty & delicious, with many items homemade. Here we tasted the best ever homemade yoghurt with blueberries (from their own farm!), made by Ranko's dad, who used to be a farmer. Room was big & comfortable, with an extra couch (cushions, sofa throw) & that was a nice touch. There was a public hot bath for use, & also a private bath on request. The 100% natural hot spring was a tad too hot, but we could add cold water to adjust it to the right temperature. The Aomori sake recommended & served (additional costs) were nice showcase of Aomori sake, which is rare in my home country. We have had an amazing time in Aomori... staying at the heart-warming Saikawa made it all the more unforgettable & we are yearning to be back.
