The 6 best hotels in Bayfield, United States

August 5, 2022 Roseanne Arnett

Bayfield, at the northern tip of Wisconsin, on the shores of Lake Superior, is the main gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, a series of pristine islands known as "The Jewels of Lake Superior." Camp, hike, kayak, scuba dive and sail amongst these 21 islands, exploring hidden sea caves, six historic light stations and forgotten ship wrecks. The mainland is a popular destination for art lovers, with a large community of local artisans operating galleries and workshops.

Delightful Weekend Retreat

Reviewed By PRK916

We stayed at Bay West. It was recently updated. From the floors to the ceiling and everything in between! Looks like lots of custom craftsmanship from the bed to the kitchen table. Even the storage for our things, which was a good size for our 3 day stay. Came with a small kitchen that was fully furnished (dishes, utensils, dish soap, etc.) with everything we needed to make our own food to save a little on lunch instead of going out for every meal. Fridge with freezer was good size for our food and drinks. Good size bathroom with toiletries included. Was able to log into my account for winding down watching tv at night on the Roku TV. It got into the 60's during the day and down to the 40s at night, so having the Air-condition and Heat was key for keeping the room nice and comfortable. I saw a previous review that there wasn't Air conditioning, so that must be another update they have done. The view from the room of Lake Superior and Madeline Island was picturesque. And just as enjoyable sitting out on the deck having a drink and playing games. We didn't light the fire pit, but nice outdoor space to guests. Walking distance to everything we wanted to do from the restaurants, shops and the ferry to Madeline Island. If you are wondering what to do just check out the book they provide. It has lots of recommendations and their story. This family owned place will definitely be where we will book next time we are in the area.

Beautiful Room, Pretty Good Food

Stayed two nights and enjoyed our spacious room, number 7, that was on the second floor and had a jacuzzi tub in the room. The room itself was very lovely, but there was a bit of noise from the squeaky floorboards when people walked in the room above ours. To be expected in an old hotel, but perhaps troublesome for a light sleeper. We had dinner in the inn's restaurant one evening, but were not impressed as we had to wait over an hour for our meal. My chicken piccata, although fine, was nothing like the traditional piccata I had expected. My spouse's trout was good. Breakfasts were nice, but not especially noteworthy. The hotel itself is beautiful. Service was mostly friendly.

Warm and comfortable

Reviewed By Rich G

Bruce and Barb are excellent innkeepers who provided a warm, friendly, and comfortable home to us for three days while we visited Bayfield and the Apostle Islands. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The food was delicious and different as one would expect from a B&B. Their dog, Apollo, was just a hoot. The other guests, along with Bruce and Barb, provided relaxing evenings of refreshing drinks, conversation, and camaraderie we will remember for years to come. We plan on returning, perhaps for the apple festival in the fall. If not for Covid19, perhaps more businesses would have been open.

We stayed at the Wild Rice Retreat recently and had the best experience! We stayed in a Nest which was clean and lovely! We enjoyed the yoga, walks along the lake, and their amazing sauna & rain showers. The food was excellent! We have severe food allergies, and the staff went way above to accommodate us! We had an amazing time and we are already planning our next stay for later this summer!
