The staff's friendliness and the location (within the citadel) are the major assets of Hotel Fortaleza de Almeida. Apart from that, the hotel is somewhat stopped in time. The commodities, the ambience and the decoration aren't meeting the current standards anymore..

I wanted to visit the fortress so we booked this hotel for a night, since it's only a 600 metre walk from the outer fortifications. It has a large car park. It is a modestly priced place and gives pretty much what you'd expect for the price. The room was small but comfortable. Not all the staff speak any English, but there was always one there when we needed it! We paid a little extra (still not expensive) for a "garden view" room - this means you look at the vegetable plot and car park, rather than the main road or the houses behind. It's nicer than I make it sound! The bar and restaurant are very popular with locals, and very busy. The bar is very basic, with a television permanently on, so not particularly restful (not that it stopped me enjoying a drink). the restaurant is good but basic. The menu is available in a sort of English ("chunk of veal" turned out to be a very tender and tasty steak) and the food is better quality than the price would make you expect. I wouldn't make a special journey to stay here, but I strongly recommend it for anyone who wants to visit Almeida. This is why the "location" score is high. However, the hotel itself can't have more than an "average", simply because that's what it is offering - everyday accommodation and food, extremely well done.

Should time allow, Fortified Village Almeida and Museo Histórico-Militar de Almeida are some popular attractions that are within walking distance. Enjoy your stay in Almeida!
Very clean rooms meaning they take serious the covid19 rules. In the breakfast table they have disposable gloves that all guests must use. Appart from that, the hotel could use some general refurbishing, painting, etc. Regardless it was a very quiet night in a good bed. Kudos to good sized bathroom with hot shower
