Very central in Turrialba town but without the traffic noise. Limited secure parking available. Nice rooms with modern en suite. (my only negative is that the in-room TV is very small). Helpful staff. Smoker's terrace with nice views of the volcano

This hostel in a tropical setting is located within a 5-minute drive of Turrialba Town Centre, has free on-site parking & is part of a little chain of awesome Spanish Schools in Costa Rica & Panama. With a terrace hammock, powerful WIFI, delicious coffee & tea, soft music and an interesting crowd of people from all over the world. Spanish by the River offers rooms with wooden interior an garden views. The dorms that we offer are to be shared with 2/3 persons and the private rooms are with shared or private bathrooms. We also offer daily traditional breakfast for $6. There is a well-equipped spacious communal kitchen, and an outside charcoal grill. This is used for our Friday Potluck BBQ party but can also be rented throughout the week. Guests will find restaurants in Turrialba Town Centre, many of which deliver to the hostel. The tour desk at Spanish by the River can arrange activities e.g. whitewater rafting, horse riding, nature outings, coffee tours and a canyon tour.
We did not plan to visit Turrialba and our initial plan was to stay there for just one night as a stop-over. However, because of this great place and the hospitality of the hosts we decided to stay for an extra day! Ingrid gave us some great advice about things to do in and around Turrialba. We visited the Guayabo ruins and also beautiful waterfalls in Aquiares. One of the best things about the accommodation were the great balcony with views of the forest (and if you are Lucky the vulcano). Also the guesthouse has the cleanest communal kitchen that we encountered during our stay in Costa Rica so we really appreciated this! We highly recommend others to stay in this place if you are travelling or even if you want to study Spanish in a calm environment.

Classic hostel since 1997 with dorms and private rooms, guest kitchen, hammocks and great information book.
A varied day, from concrete San Jo, round the lava fields of high Irazu volcano, through Cartago, to green Orosi. Montana Linda was just the ticket: relax in the courtyard with randomly barking yet waggy doggies. The lady at reception has a kindly nature, but she seemed to just ghost off somewhere; no matter: gently left to feel home from home. I was the sole guest but for an Englishman who was halfway down his motorbike trip from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego: some interesting tales; and a French lady who was pleasant company for a village wander next morning. Dorm bed was comfy and the washrooms well kept. A refreshing interlude.
