January 2, 2022 Hector Krause

From Alberta’s southwestern border north into British Columbia, the Canadian Rockies are a network of provincial and national parks that collectively make up a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Banff and Jasper national parks are connected by the Icefields Parkway, one of the most scenic drives in the world. The towns of Canmore, Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper are hubs for adventures including hiking, horseback riding, rafting and wildlife viewing. Accommodation ranges from hotels to mountain lodges.

Buffalo Nations Luxton Museum

This natural history and Canadian First Nations museum is named after Norman Luxton who once operated a trading post in the Banff area. Come in for a tour of what life was like for First Nations before settlers came and then view authentic First Nations artifacts, borrowed from both personal collections and the Glenbow Museum. Tours of the Buffalo Nations Luxton Museum guided by staff who are local First Nations. Ask questions, learn and experience something truly Canadian.

I thoroughly enjoyed the authentic artifacts, displays and dioramas depicting the life and culture of the First Nation people who lived in this part of Canada. The museum is owned and operated by a Council of First Nation representatives and is a must see for anyone having an interest in First Nation history. Ideal for families and children. Convenient location on the river, near the Main St. bridge.

Jasper-Yellowhead Museum & Archives

Our museum offers an engaging, interactive record of Jasper’s fascinating history. Our exhibits include the history of the Indigenous and Metis people of the Athabasca Valley; the fur trade-including David Thompson, one of Canada’s foremost explorers; the railway; early mountaineering- including the story of the Silver Ice Axe and first ascent of Mount Alberta and the development of tourism in Jasper National Park. The exhibits in our Showcase Gallery are changed regularly & this year we are partnering with the Lake Edith Artist Group & associates to put together a 100th anniversary exhibit on the artist colony where we will be showcasing stories, art, artifacts, and historic photos of the last one hundred years. This collaborative effort will run from mid-April to the end of October 2021. We will also be hosting a social media competition that asks participants to recreate artwork or photographs in the exhibit in a new and inventive ways. Come & learn about "Our Jasper Stories".

The history of jasper and the park taking in the first nations, settlers, explorers, mountaineers, fur traders, railway workers, tourists and park rangers. Their special exhibition at the moment is about the internment camps around the area and further afield in Canada during the war and how those interned built a lot of the infrastructure for the national parks. Something I knew absolutely nothing about.
