The 6 Best Geologic Formations in Kauai, Hawaii (HI)

January 2, 2022 Emerita Lamoureux

Relaxing and pristine Kauai (the Garden Island) is the least commercially developed of the Hawaiian islands. Waterfalls, scenic drives and more than 60 beaches dot the landscape. Some beaches have great snorkeling, others offer child-friendly tidal pools and some are perfect for all kinds of water sports. Dry-land activities include hiking the Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali coastline, taking a day trip to Waimea Canyon and experiencing life on a sugar plantation at Grove Farm Homestead Museum.

If your up for a hike down a crazy trail this is for you. Great little waterfall, amazing ocean views. Be prepared wear gym shoes the trail is challenging and can be difficult for some. The areas of the shore are amazing and have several areas where the water will cascade across tide pools and if you get to close soak you!! Be careful it’s a long drop to the ocean!

Hanapepe Salt Ponds

If you want to see how ancient Hawaiians produced table salt from the sea, you can see it today - very similar to how it was done when the first people arrived. Salt Pond Beach is where you can see several family salt ponds. The work happens in the summer, when the sun dries the salt water fastest and the rain doesn't dilute the saline pools. You can't disturb the pools but you can get an idea of how the work is done. If you go in the summer, maybe you can find out from the folks how they produce the salt. You cannot sell it but you can make it for your family or for gifts.

Spouting Horn

Water forced through a lava tube produces hissing and a plume of spray.

Great quick stop - spouts every minute - watch for swimming sea turtles in the breaking waves - lots of vendors setting up I guess for large tour groups - go early to avoid crowds - small platform to see spouts - worth a visit!
