This 117 mile road follows old toll, stagecoach and rail routes that were important supply lines for silver and gold mining camps of the late 1800's. It starts at South Fork, goes through Creede and Lake City all the way to Gunnison. The views are varied with waterfalls, rivers, mountains, trees and valleys. This was a beautiful drive especially during our visit in October seeing the fall colors of the aspen leaves.

If you're driving through this area, you have to make this stop. It's a quick walk from the parking lot to the waterfall viewing area and this waterfall is impressive!

This remote area can be reached by mountain bike, hiking trail or in a four wheel drive vehicle.
We have been coming to Creede for nearly 30 years and have heard for years that you either need to do a hike or 4x4 trail into the site. The hike is a little to long for us and the word on the 4x4 trail was that it was the most bumpy and miserable trail into the site. Therefore, we hadn’t been on it. This year we rented a 6-seater ATV from Creede Adventure Rentals and we had an absolute blast! The trail is rough but some normal 4x4s were there but mostly ATVs. There is a hike at the end of the trail that takes a minimum of about 30-45minutes to get to the overlook. Make sure if you aren’t taking the whole 3 mile loop trail (1.5 hr minimum) to take a left at the trail split to see into and overlook the geologic area. It is absolutely beautiful. Also our ATV rental was around $375 for the day. Expect a full 2.5 hours up to the hiking portion. I would recommend a full 2-3 hours for the hike, photons, and hang out and then budget another 1.5 hours down (this was pushing it with no stops at full speed). I would try to slow the decent the next time to around 2 hours. The rental company dropped us around 9:30am and we finished exactly at the return time at 4:30pm. We will definitely do this again!!!

This is a 1891 silver mine that is being restored and open- free to see. It has rock and mineral collecting, old buildings, its own museum and mine buildings. We are working on opening the underground for tours and continuing to restore several old structures. The 1891 tunnel was opened in June 2014 and is currently undergoing restoration for the upcoming public opening. Come stay overnite with us in one of the restored mining cabins, fully furnished and wake up to the old mining history. The best time you can have in Creede, Colorado. Visit our free museum see great vistas and you and your loved will leave with memories that will last a lifetime. You will visit no other place quite like this place,
We accidentally happened upon the Last Chance mine and are so glad we did. The history told by the owner's daughter, was detailed and kept our attention. Then the owner, Jack took us on a mine tour and gave us more history! We had visited a gold mine many years ago and the Last Chance experience was so much better! It was amazing to see all the different gems and colors in a silver mine. The tour was definitely worth the entry fee. There are also 3 cabins on site that we looked at and a gift shop. Most of the jewelry in the gift shop is made by Jack. Jack makes the jewelry during the winter months from stones and gems found in the mine. Take some time to stop by the Last Chance and tell Jack hi. Worth the stop.

Slight different approach from last review. If you do the bachelor loop and it can be done so pretty easily if you go the back way which would be clockwise in about any vehicle. I did it in my Kia minivan with no problem.. If you have a 4x4 and preferably an ATV or UTV there is a cutoff on the bachelor loop that goes way up to an old mission. Its a great ride and can be very challenging in some places. Very rocky and difficulty in a few spots. In my UTV I had to reroute in a couple of places that I didn't feel comfortable with.. Some really deep pits in one small section. Great for ATV enthusiasts. I suggest stopping at the visitors center and getting a map and ask They warned me not to do a certain section as they had several riders hurt really bad over past few weeks and had to be lifted out. Stupid me I got the directions wrong and went right thru it, but wasn't really that bad if you don't do stupid.
