Yuki's home cooking class was the best part of our trip to Japan! She truly went above and beyond in walking us to and from the train station to her home and teaching us all about traditional Japanese culture and cooking. We were able to choose which dish we wanted to prepare prior to our arrival (we chose Gyoza) and she ensured that we were comfortable and well-fed in her home while giving us a wealth of knowledge in Japanese cooking. We made gyoza, Japanese omelets, miso soup, cucumber salad, and rice. For dessert we had the peaches, grapes, and cookies. She also gave us the recipes to take home with us and gave wonderful recommendations for the rest of our time in Japan. Yuki's cooking class was the highlight of our trip to Japan and we are recommending her home cooking experience to all of our family and friends who visit!

Cooking Sun Tokyo is a Japanese cooking class for international travelers. We are located in Shinjuku area near JR Shinanomachi station. Classes are twice a day; Sushi class and Wagyu Kaiseki class. We welcome couples, friends, families, single travelers from around the world and of any skill level!
We took a local train there from Shinjuku (was only a couple of stops) and used google maps to get there. It was a quick 5 minute walk and found it pretty easily. It has a small sign in the window of an otherwise ordinary looking apartment block. The almost 3 hours flew by. We were a family of 4 (children 9 and 11) and were the only participants. The kids participated in everything (including using the knives) and were very capable of making their own sushi platters. Our instructor spoke perfect English, gave us loads of information and made the class fun and interesting. It was rewarding to eat the yummy sushi we had made and we are definitely looking to make sushi at home in the near future. We have all the recipes and more. It was very good value for money. My kids and I had the best time making sushi and miso soup with Sakiko-san. You'd think that a remote online lesson for kids (10 and 12) would be a disaster but the results were very impressive! I'm so proud of the work they did following the instructor's direction - she had a lot of patience! The camera setup made it easy to follow step-by-step: one camera for the chef, one for her hands and ingredients. We are looking forward to another class!

Since I have certified sake sommelier and fermented food master, she is happy to share all her knowledge of Japanese food culture to the attendants. The session makes you cook Japanese food much easier than you thought. Japanese people love to use seasonable and fermented ingredients, which are very tasty, but also have an impact on our health and wellbeing, contributing to a long, healthy life, that may just be that "eye-opening" experience for you. After the lecture, you will start to cook Japanese home-style, dishes using seasonings you just learned and seasonal fresh ingredients. Whenever we travel my husband and I like to take a cooking class and then host a dinner party serving the dishes we made. So while visiting Japan we booked this class with Fukuko to learn to make the local specialty, Okinomiaki. We were so happy we did, as the whole experience exceeded our expectations. We met at her beautiful new home and worked in her fully equipped and modern kitchen in a quiet yet accessible neighborhood in Tokyo. We were in for a treat! In addition to the main dish, we made at least 6 sides and then enjoyed the feast. Fukuko is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable teacher with a very gentle manner. And in addition to her culinary expertise she happens to be a certified sake sommelier! We so enjoyed our afternoon of cooking, eating, drinking and chatting. We feel that a class like this provides interesting insight into a culture like typical sightseeing cannot. From our first contact her communication was clear, directions to the home were easy to follow, and she even made some recommendations for shopping in the area! All recipes were provided in a follow up email and we look forward to visiting the Japanese market in Chicago and making them again. Thank you very much Fukuko! We had a great time.
