This was epic! Was fun going to the food market to chose your veg and see the locals. Be aware the hosts buy your spices and you are brought in to buy your own from the shop! The cooking and prep take a while but it's great to see and I loved seeing how coconut is used in so many different ways The wait was worth it as the food was one of the best meals I had. Not sure if left overs were needed for friends / family but I ate the lot. The okra curry was my favourite. You need to take notes of all the ingredients on the go, keeps you on your toes. Also it's great value , 3-4 hrs and a great meal.

Loved our cooking class with Yamuna today. The class itself was informal, relaxed and informative. We learned how to make coconut milk from scratch as well as cooking a variety of different curries, dahl, rice and coconut sambal. Each element/curry was slightly different and the finished meal was incredible. Some of the best curries we’ve eaten in Sri Lanka (and we’ve been here a month) as well as one of the best dahls. One highlight for us was being able to go to the market with her cousin, who was lovely, to buy the vegetables and fish. We were able to choose whichever vegetables we liked which was great because it meant we got to try some more unusual curries such as banana and mango. We also got to make a fibre root salad as well, an ingredient we hadn’t seen on a menu but very local so we wanted to try. Yamuna was very friendly and you could tell really enjoyed teaching about Sri Lankan cooking... she must do since she’s been doing cooking class for 10 years now! She was also very open to chat with us about culture and her town of Unawatuna which we found fascinating. The kitchen space was also really nice to work in, it was semi outdoors but very clean and well organised. All in all, very good experience and very much recommended to tourists and travellers!

Met at the Green Market for an introduction to the fruit and veg of Sri Lanka - chose to cook beetroot, pineapple and aubergine. Two other veg chosen by the group then fish or chicken. Tuk tuk ride to the restaurant then a cooking demo with lots of opportunity help prep and ask questions. Food was great. Could photograph handwritten recipes. Lunch was very generous. Great value overall and lovely family including their adopted cats and dogs.

We are a mother and daughter running cooking classes ten minutes from the beach in Unawatuna. With a breezy, open kitchen overlooking the jungle where you can see monkeys, peacocks and many birds. First we take you to the market to select the freshest fish and vegetables for cooking. Then we will show you how to prepare them using delicious Sri Lankan spices and cooking in traditional clay pots.
Sea waves - Cooking Class We arrived at 10am - there were 6 of us and we were taken by 3 Tuktuks to the fish market just outside Galle fort - the fish are so fresh and well presented on their stalls - such a choice. Sosanti bought some tuna. we then moved on by our Tuk Tuk along a bustling street to the vegetable market. This was in an old building built by the Dutch (I think as a market place) - amazingly well preserved and a perfect covered yet open area for a market. Sosanti showed us loads of different vegetables that we’d never come across before - snake gourd, Bitter gourd Long Beans. She showed us what the fiberoot looked like when cut. We tried some strange fruits including red bananas- which we had to admit tasted very similar to the bananas we eat in the UK. Having bought the long beans, sweet potato, okra, aubergine and banana flowers we returned to Sea Waves in our Tuk Tuks. We were each given an apron, told to wash our hands then were set to work. Firstly Sosanti cut open a coconut- which if you strike it correctly will neatly split in half. We each drank its milk then She showed us how to shred the white flesh. Once all shredded and tasted, it was put in a blender with water and blended. This mixture was then sei Ed and the coconut pulp squeezed out. The coconut pulp was then returned to the blender with more water and the process was repeated ant this time the coconut pulp was finished with. Now we prepared the vegetables: Peeled and chopped sweet potatoes Peeled and Sliced 2 whole bulbs of garlic Chopped small red onions Chopped small slim aubergines Chopped okra We snapped the beans into I inch lengths All along things were being cooked On the fire The rice was cooked and she showed us how much water to add Each dish was chopped into a dish and the spices were added : cinnamon sticks, lemongrass, curry leaves, Unroasted, roasted and black curry powder Turmeric mustard powder and a few others Sosanti fried popadoms and put the tuna dish together but we were each involved in the veggie dishes. My favourite was the fried aubergine with Red onion and tomato salad - delicious It was all delicious and a really fun way to spend a morning We finished the event by eating the dishes - all wonderful. She let us copy the recipes to make them ourselves back home - which we are doing.

Karuna took us to the fish market, and then spice and vegetables. The tuna we bought was amazing, and the whole lesson was fantastically hosted and directed. Karuna is a lot of fun, all the curries delicious, and we've used the recipes many times since. She even let me take a whole load of curry leaves back and we went for a hunt for pandanus around town. If you like to cook curry, you must do this!

Today we had a great cooking class at Vinitha‘s house. First we went to the local market to shop some ingredients for our curries. Afterwards we went to her house to cook in her outdoor kitchen. We prepared the food together and Vinitha made sure that we have the recipes to recreate the dishes at home ???? We learned quite a lot and it was interesting to see how to produce coconut milk. The food was super tasty and Vinitha was a great host and teacher. If you are looking for a cooking class you should go to her place. Thanks again Vinitha!
