The Hawaiian island of Maui is a destination for true nature lovers. The ethereal bamboo forest and churning waterfalls in Haleakala National Park can be explored via the Waimoku Falls Trail. Stretch out on warm, golden sands or hit the surf for an unforgettable windsurfing or snorkeling session. Driving the scenic road to Hana along the island’s northeastern shore will be among the most spectacular journeys of your life. Time stands still at the Hawaiian village of Keanae, definitely worth a visit.

NAMED ONE OF THE TOP 10 BEACH FRONT HOTELS IN THE WORLD BY FROMMERS, Napili Sunset is different from most hotels; Napili Sunset is quite literally, on the beach. Napili Sunset’s two story Kanani and Kekalani buildings house 26 units which open to an elevated lawn with a commanding view of Napil Bay, the islands of Molokai and Lanai, and spectacular sunsets over the Pacific Ocean. Napili Sunset is on Napili Bay, a quarter mile long and crescent shaped, the bay forms a beach with warm golden sand and inviting blue waters. Reefs protect the beach from large waves and provide a home for colorful tropical fish, sea turtles and beautiful coral. Napili beach is widely recognized as one of the best beaches in all of Hawaii.
This is a nice resort that has three buildings. Two buildings are on the beach and seem to have larger rooms, but the third building is across the road. The room we were assigned was across the road. The main bed in that room was a Murphy bed (folds into the wall). I don’t believe the bed is operable for folding up, but the hotel has left the walls around the bed (see photo). This prevents having a nightstand or lamp needed for phones, clocks and CPAP. Uncomfortable situation. That structure around the beds should be removed as they have no function. The description I received from the booking agency stated the room had a queen bed and a fold up bed… totally wrong and misleading. On a positive note, the bedding was comfortable. The room has a small air conditioner. The personnel were quite friendly.

When we go out there, the traps are the first thing we buy to get rid of them.”, condo owner. This is a direct quote from the owner, after I contacted them upon arrival regarding the cockroaches and they asked me to go buy roach traps to put in unit for them. The unit feels like an old dingy motel room that used to be a smoking room. It just has that layer of old dirt that feels icky but cockroaches love. There was hair on the bathroom floor. There were corn chips on the floor between the couch and the coffee table as though the place hadn’t been swept or vacuumed. There was stuck on food on the dishes that we pulled out of the cupboards. The carpets are stained and feel grimy as well as the fabric furniture. There is a dirt layer around all the little nooks. The bedding is old dirty dingy and grey in the corners as though it’s been stepped on and unwashed for a number of years. I wish I had googled and read more reviews before I purchased 8 nights directly from the owner. Upon looking at reviews now I can see that this unit was described as filthy as far as back as 2011. Sadly, it still is in poor condition. I did not care that the building was old. I did not care that the furniture was outdated. But in the very least the place could have been kept better. And ya know what, I could’ve even dealt with that, but I just couldn’t except the cockroach infestation and the way the owners handled us regarding it. Our first impression when we walked in and turned on the lights was to see cockroaches scatter. This instantly triggered all sorts of anxieties and stress. We had paid in full in advance during peak season. So, I didn’t attempt to find an alternative location and go through whatever process it might’ve taken to get a refund if that was even possible. I wrote the owner and asked him to send exterminators ASAP. The owner was apologetic. Aside from mentioning that they had to get roach traps every time they go there; they blamed the building for not doing regular extermination and forwarded my email to the general manager. He said that he would make it worth my time if I went out of my way and purchased roach traps. And then he went silent. It is an awful experience having to waste valuable vacation time on trying to eliminate a roach infestation. Having to do all that cleaning, breathing in poison, being super extra careful with every bit of food, not being able to just put something down on the counters, etc. There was the exhaustion of being constantly stressed and worried that one might get into your luggage and you’d end up carrying an infestation to your own home. Even when I got home it took a few days for me to relax enough to put food on my counters at home because my brain was still on such high alert. I never have come across this problem in any Maui condos I’ve rented over the years. I used to live in Hawaii and experienced the island roaches. These are not the big, dark, flying cockroaches that are endemic to the islands. These are German roaches that are the fast multiplier type that have super tiny babies that can slip into your belongings easily. Despite our efforts we spotted and killed roaches on a daily basis. This took away all our relaxation. It added a ton of stress. It ruined our time. Halfway into our trip we just happened to notice a flyer posted in the elevator that we had to evacuate the premises by 7am on our last full day there as the building was having an exterminator come. Which of course was another stressor on us to have to leave so early especially on our last full day to rest. I don’t know about you, but for me vacation time is extremely rare and hard to come by in my line of work. And I work way too hard to waste my money and time on this mess rather than rest. After I got back home, I wrote the owner stating that I had expected to hear from him sooner. I reminded him that he told me he would make it worth my time if I went out and bought roach poison for him. He replied that he would send me $100 for the roach traps and my time. I thanked him and told if he is taking our “time” into consideration then the decent thing to do would be to compensate us for our time every day we were there. I asked him how I can expect to receive this $100. He never replied buta couple weeks later I gota check in the mail for $125. It is not that big of a deal to receive it. It was all about respect. I was willing to put forth my hard-earned money and give my precious time to them in trusting that their rental unit was in the very least a clean place to gather rest. But I can clearly see now that these owners are careless, irresponsible, dishonest, and unkind. Owners have no aloha! If these types of things do not bother you then by all means it is a great geographical spot on the map to stay. But I wouldn’t stay in their unit. I felt obligated to leave an honest description in the review so that any other shoppers can make an informed decision before chancing their hard-earned time and money on them.

You know you’ve selected a bad place to stay when, upon walking in to your room, you are immediately searching for an earlier flight home! The Good stuff: The woman at the front desk was very nice. Check in for VI owners is weird though, you check in over a phone outside the office and they tell you the room number and the code to get your key, and they warn you multiple times of the fees if you lock yourself out (I guess the front desk does not have keys to the VI units?). The Bad stuff: I was in building 13, towards the front of the property. I was hit with an overpowering odor of a cheap cleaning fluid (it lingered for two days) but the place was not very clean. There was hair in the bathroom sink, on the floor and in the tub . The kitchen floor was sticky. The curtains were ripped. The fans in the closet were filled with lint and who knows what else - absolutely disgusting. There were pieces of what appeared to be bamboo (?) on the living room rug , I have a feeling it was not vacuumed very well, but the rug was so dark it was hard to tell. I wanted to cover the sofa with an extra sheet in the closet (because by this point I’m sure nothing was very clean) and the extra sheet appeared to be used- so gross!. But the worst part was the outdoor patio area for the unit -the lanai overlooked a parking lot of a restaurant where there was constant noise (trash trucks, delivery trucks, police cars, drunks). The lanai itself was depressing and included a pretty gross outdoor rug and filthy pan under the ac unit . Not a place to sit and have your morning coffee. There is a warning that the property is in an urban setting - Trust that warning! It is very disruptive. The only thing that kept me sane during this trip was the fact that there were some pretty nice beaches directly across the street, and the sunsets were stunning. If you are a VI owner, save your points and avoid this disappointment.

There was old brocolli and water in 2 crispers. Took them out to dump out the water and throw away brocolli. A big dead roach was underneath the crisper INSIDE THE FRIDGE along with dirt and hair. Also the loveseat had recliners on ea end but they werent hooked up. Also no measuring cups or spoons were there. Couldnt cook. Everything was called to the property mgr Crystal Swank who didnt seem too concerned. She sent the cleaning lady back over to clean out the roach and debris from the fridge but she couldnt find the controls for the loveseat. And she just said oh well guess the measuring cups and spoons disappeared. Ill never stay there again just because she acted as if it was no big deal.

I cannot recommend booking with Ho'olei enough. We had four adults (two married couples) and one infant and the experience was fantastic. First off, the Ho'olei team was extremely communicative weeks before our trip even started. We had texts and emails with the concierge regularly As a parent of an infant, the included high chair, crib, and baby proofing of the unit was extremely helpful. It was all set up when we arrived. Additionally, as we had a full kitchen and grill, they have a grocery service that will pick up groceries before you get there. We arrived at 2AM our time (8PM Hawaii time) and all of our groceries were put away in the fridge and on the counter ready for us to use. It was a very nice thing after 14+ hours of travel. Check in was very smooth with clear instructions of how to use the property. We had a Deluxe Ocean View which meant we were in the last row. The views of the ocean were incredible with multiple whale sightings per day. The only downfall of this is that the walk down to the pool or the hotel was a little longer. However, if you do want to go to the hotel, free valet was included in our stay which was a huge bonus. Additionally, when you don't want to drive, there is a daily shuttle service you just text to get picked up that runs until 8PM (however the valets take over after 8PM) Our concierge helped us book 99% of our activities. We also had a reservation as Mama's fish house, which you have to book months in advance. At the last minute we had another guest wanting to join us for dinner and the concierge was able to contact the restaurant and add the additional guest. This was a fantastic trip and if you have any questions I am more than happy to answer it!!

We booked this hotel after reviewing accommodations on line. Everything looked very promising. The pictures on line looked great. But... when we checked in they told us that there is no cleaning service due to COVID 19. It means that for 7 days our rooms won’t be clean. We need to call them every time we need anything, we need to take care of garbage. The other reason we booked this hotel because they have gym. Not only this gym works limited ours, you have to pay $5 to work out. Plus, everything in the room is outdated, old furniture, old lamps. The pool does not have umbrellas so you have to be on the sun all day + they closed one pool for repair. The positive is the weather and nice garden on the property.
