Berlin is an edgy city, from its fashion to its architecture to its charged political history. The Berlin Wall is a sobering reminder of the hyper-charged postwar atmosphere, and yet the graffiti art that now covers its remnants has become symbolic of social progress. Check out the Weltzeituhr (world time) Clock, topped by a model of the solar system, then turn back time by dining at the historic Zur Letzten Instanz, a 16th century restaurant that was frequented by Napoleon and Beethoven.

The Schaubuhne am Lehniner Platz, situated in a striking former cinema designed by Erich Mendelssohn and situated on Kurfurstendamm , is the biggest theatre in West Berlin. The programme focusses on social and political issues, and one of the theatre's distinctive features is a wide range of directing styles, which also includes new forms of dance and musical theatre. Alongside directors from Berlin such as Thomas Ostermeier, Michael Thalheimer, Falk Richter and Marius von Mayenburg internationally renowned directors from abroad work here, for example Alvis Hermanis, Katie Mitchell and the choreographer Constanza Macras. The productions concentrate on telling stories - both classical and contemporary - and on the ensemble, which includes film stars like Nina Hoss and Lars Eidinger. The Schaubuhne is one of the best known German theatres in the world and plays over 100 performances across the globe every year. In Berlin, up to three shows from the large repertoire are shown every night, frequently with English and French surtitles.

There is a place in Schaperstrasse in Wilmersdorf, a little hidden from view, where the glamour of 1920s Berlin with its love of nightlife has found a home again for almost twenty years. Bohéme Sauvage in the BAR JEDER VERNUNFT, a Spiegeltent – from outside unimposing, but on the inside a glittering ball room – where the intimate location is reflected in the countless smaller and larger mirrors which transform it into a boundless, magical world in which anything seems possible! The Spiegeltent is the stage for the créme de la créme of intelligent cabaret acts ranging from chanson to comedy.
