A lovely Abbey that’s been well preserved by many hands over many years. Great Roman mosaic floor by the abse, too . Well worth an hour or two & a trip up the tower !

We really enjoyed our trip to Chateau (Castle) Brancion, but talk about a side-trip on a side-road to get there. Our GPS took us on a small gravel road up the side of a steep hill that bypassed the parking lot and deposited us right outside the main gate. Not knowing any difference, we drove through the gate and parked in an area that I think was reserved for the workers. We didn't discover that we had come in the wrong way until we left, on a paved road that passed the downhill parking lot. Other than that, I think our visit was somewhat normal. The first thing we did was rent the audio guide, which I highly recommend, and toured the castle/fort. The information provided by the audio guide was very interesting and informative. If you are physically able, climb the steps to the top of the tower because the views and photos are well worth it. Originally built in the 12th century, restoration and renovation of the fortifications and ruins began in 1959 and are still in progress. In 1977, the entire village was classified as a historical monument. The castle remains the largest fort-castle in Southern Burgundy and is a good example of fort architecture of the Middle Ages. Located on a hill, the top of the fortress offers a wonderful view of the small village of Brancion (including the marketplace and Romanesque church) and far below into the valley. The small village with its market is nice to explore. It has a couple of shops and restaurants but is not too touristy. The church is quaint with some wall murals and frescoes that have not been restored.
