Children's Museum of Virginia is an excellent museum. They have lots of exhibits and they work! We have literally taken our three kids ages 5 (twins) and 11 to kids museums throughout the continental U.S. and this one rates right up there as one of the best.

Portsmouth, VA doesn't get a lot of reviews or high praise. But if you find yourself in the area visiting friends or family, take a short trip over to Portsmouth City Park. The park is small but quaint and family friendly. It is well maintained and clean, with the added bonus of a golf course, fenced in tennis court, boat launch, playground, and Sheltered picnic areas, on the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River. The entrance is hidden by an age-old cemetery, but be surprised by the peaceful reflection of the park when you get there.

I used to live 10 minutes from this lovely place and went there very often. I never had enough and was never boring since it has so many trails and hidden corners, that every time you go, you discover something new. My favorite spot was the marsh deck (when you enter the park, take a left and continue straight, you will find the sign that leads you to this spot). It is spectacular. And it is always different. It is definitely worth a visit, specially in fall... the colors are astonishing. You can make your visit as short or as long as you want. You can either stay on the main path around the lake (approx 15 - 20 minutes), or explore every trail you will find along the way. The service is amazing and it is FREE. I would nevertheless recommend you leave a donation. I will be wisely used to preserve the park.

A 1910 4-8-0 locomotive, coal tender, mail cars, dining car & caboose make up this specially museum pertaining to steam trains & railroad history. Fun for ALL ages!
I concur with the other reviews - worth the stop! - great curators: they're knowledgeable about the train and it's artifacts and go out of their way to take care of you on your visit. Their passion is contagious! - all of the museum is housed inside the train cars. There's old railroad memorabilia, train toys and Thomas shows for smaller kids, and a large, running HO layout. - everyone in my family, young and old, thoroughly enjoyed their time!
