Last night, we went with friends to the Downtown Caberet Theater in Bridgeport, CT for the first show of our season ticket subscription--The Hunchback of Notre Dame. To put it mildly, this show is a KNOCKOUT. Once again DCT, has presented us with the epitome of great regional theater. Quasimodo is by a newbie to the DCT stage--Ben McCormack, who acts and sings like a seasoned pro. Ben has a big voice and can hold notes like very few performers can. You want to breathe for him while he belts out notes that just keeps going on and on. He has great power. His on-stage agility is amazing, especially since he has a sandbag on his back for the entire show and is in a crouched position as well. Esmerelda is wonderfully played by Alexis Willoughby, who graduated from Western Connecticut State University's Theater Arts Department. She surprised and delighted the audience from the moment she walked on stage. Alexis is an emotional and sultry actress, and has the ability to make the audience feel like she is singing to each person individually. Oh, and by the way, she has a beautiful and powerful voice. Phoebus De Martin's--superbly played by Nicholas Kuell--has pedigree that originates in the English Department of Darien High School. He is a really fine singer with lots of power to spare, and he can act too. It doesn't hurt that when he swaggers the stage seems to sway with his footsteps. Together, this ensemble is truly mesmerizing. They can all act up a storm, sing like pushing back a tempest, and keep your attention unwavering on the stage. Get tickets for this show before you miss them!

Conceived and constructed by the great American showman, P.T. Barnum, The Barnum Museum has proudly served an international audience since 1893, and is one of our country's great national treasures. The ornate, exotic building distinguishes the City of Bridgeport, Connecticut's uniqueness, it is a symbol of achievement and creativity, and is a testament to the pioneers and visionaries of the 19th century.
Our kids are huge fans of The Greatest Showman, so we knew we had to visit here during our recent vacation to CT. We were not disappointed. Although the museum is currently under renovation and has limited hours, the staff who was operating the museum was exceptional. We were the only visitors at the time, and the lovely woman (whose name sadly escapes me) personally took us through the exhibits and told us all about Barnum and his many fantastic experiences. Even though they were trying to close up the museum for the day, she wanted to make sure we had a great time, and we certainly did. I would highly recommend it to fans of Barnum and the circus culture. I would love to go back when the renovation is complete.

I like this place because it is not crowded and keeps kids 1-10 years of age or even a little older occupied for 2 hours without much headache for the parents. All the rooms are well designed and interactive and the planetarium show is great. If it is a life one for older kids and if it is a recording for younger kids. Great place!!

My daughter and I enjoyed our first visit to the zoo so much, we decided to come back and bring my husband. We've been to the Bronx Zoo many times, and spent two days at the Columbus Zoo this summer. We love the Beardsley Zoo because of it's manageable size. We feel we can stop and watch the animals longer, as we aren't trying to cover as much ground as we do at the large zoos. For a small, easy to navigate zoo, there is a great deal happening. We have an AZA zoo membership at our local zoo, so we are able to visit reciprocal zoos for free or in some cases half price. Beardsley Zoo has free parking, and free admission with our zoo membership card from NY. We always bring our own food when we go on excursions. We have dietary issues, and we like to save money. We were pleased to discover on our first visit, that the cafe had reasonable prices for a zoo. We brought our own fruit and veggies this time, and treated ourselves to some items from the cafe. There are picnic spots throughout the zoo. My daughter was disappointed in the gift shop this visit. On our previous visit, it was packed full or interesting items, but it was quite bare when we were there before Halloween. We just caught them when they were gearing up for the holiday shop. It didn't stop her from finding an affordable souvenier. We were there the day they set up the scarecrows. They weren't there when we entered, and I had been looking for them. When we came out, they were set up in front of the greenhouse. I thought they were fantastic. We had great encounters with the staff at the zoo, with the exception of the lady at the admission desk. I remember the same thing from our last visit. The volunteers and staff inside the zoo were friendly and informative. We had a great visit with two volunteers near the alligators, and with the woman in the education center. I think what surprised me the most was the new exhibit that had opened since we were there in May. A great deal of work has been taking place in the Barnyard area, they will be getting bears, and the otter enclosure is going to be renovated. There is a lot going on for a small zoo!

Best beach in Fairfield county CT. I have lived in Bridgeport all my life and can definitely say it is the best beach in the area. The beachfront is very long with plenty of sandy areas to layout. If you like they have plenty of grills where families can enjoy the park. Tons of parking areas but do come early during the summer because it gets packed. In addition to the beach they also have plenty of ball fields where young kids and adults can play baseball. Also plenty of space for our soccer leagues to play as well. I have even seen folks play críquet (sp?) as well. During the summer they install volleyball nets for groups to enjoy. Last but definitely not least is the bandshell which plays host to plenty of music shows and programs. You do need a Parking sticker to park in the park so be aware if you are a non-resident; you will be ticketed if you don’t have a perk permit.
