National Art Gallery

Tenth century paintings, religious statues and relics occupy one building while the other contains mostly modern works.

A somewhat confusing place if you didn't have a guide to direct you. Several galleries, the most fascinating of which was the Bronze Statue Gallery. Interesting to see the same deities interpreted from different ages. Photography is limited in some areas which is disappointing.

Cholamandal Artists' Village

An unassuming introduction to local art, the Cholamandal Village is a serene set-up, displaying works of upcoming and established artists, painters and sculptors from South India. It was built in 1966 and is nine kilometers from the city. The village houses an art gallery, museum and an amphitheater for theater performances. This is a residential village for the artists, so a polite reserve is appreciated.

I am not a modern art fan. The art here, however, blew me away - it was so evocative of what I believe to be India that it made me aware of the socio-political contexts of art. The museum itself is so unassuming that it's easy to pass it by. But it's become a highlight of my Madras experience, and I will re-visit with friends (my friends from Spain were impressed too) whenever I can.

3D Click Art Museum inside the same VGP Snow world complex. We had a wonderful time here. Everyone was motivated to get out of their comfort zone and explore the 3D world around them. It was a fantastic experience. Suggested positions to be taken beside the 3D art for best photographs, by the creator, was well thought out as it gives you the best pictures.
