Believe me, I spent 13 years in the ceramics lab at College of DuPage, back in the 80's and 90's. I had a artist's in residence status, that allowed me keys to come and go. I spent many hours of my spare time enjoying the friendship of many different instructors and students, while working on my own techniques in porcelain art. Recently, I ran into one of my inner circle buddies from that group, while at an art fair in Geneva. Kate Keilty had her own booth, and told me how things at C.O.D. fell apart when a new department head took over. They were no longer happy to have students repeat the course in ceramics, over and over. Some people were production potters, and were using the studio too much. So a group of ceramic artists broke away to start their own co-op, and began what is today Clay Place. That's what my attention, and I went to see it for myself a few days later. I was impressed by the number of kilns, the types of kilns, the huge area being utilized for wheels, tables, and storage. I got a full tour, and was totally impressed. The classes are taught by professional ceramic artists, as well as ones with teaching backgrounds. Supplies were priced reasonably, because of their co-op, Not-for -profit status. I am currently working in fused glass, at a studio about ten minutes from this location, and have a good place to sell my jewelry as well as doing trunk shows. If I went back to ceramics, I would go to ClaySpace in a heartbeat. I have told all my friends who have shown an interest in clay that I highly recommend this fine environment for learning and personal growth in all things clay.
