The 5 Best Waterfalls in Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai Province

September 14, 2021 Fernanda Pittenger

You could spend your whole Chiang Mai vacation exploring the famous Night Bazaar. Once you’ve exhausted the art of the cheerful haggle, however, there’s plenty more to explore. The National Museum and Botanic Garden are great places to soak up some local culture and to breathe in the delicate fragrance of Thai orchids. In the city’s center, the remains of ancient walls embrace over 30 temples. Limber travelers can climb 300 stairs to Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, an ornate Buddhist temple in the hills.

Mae Sa Waterfall

Mae Sa waterfall was a great day trip, there was 10 stages to the waterfall each stage being individual and unique. The water was cold and felt amazing to swim in leaving you feeling fresh afterwards. Nearby are many local restaurants at good price in beautiful locations. I would recommend heading up the mountain your visit at the waterfall to catch the sunset from high ground.

I was traveling from Pai back to Chiang Mai and stopped to see the waterfall. I was skeptical of the entrance fee 100 baht but quickly paid because that is only $3.00 US. It is about a 5-10 minute walk to the waterfall. Make sure to leave anything you don't want to get wet because the waterfall area gets very wet from the mist. The waterfall itself is very beautiful and the best one I had seen in Thailand.

Huay Keaw Waterfall

We had taken a songthaew to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, and on the way back to the old city, we requested to be dropped off at the Chiang Mai Zoo. From the zoo, it's not a far walk (I'm sure you could ask to be dropped off closer). It's a short trail to the waterfall, and the waterfall itself is really pretty. The rocks are a little slippery but not bad. Really enjoyed getting out of the city and worth the short trek out here. There were a lot of people but not too crowded. Leaving the waterfall, there were songthaews very close by. For two, it was 60B back to the old city.
