Jekyll Island Convention Center

I attended the Georgia Tourism Conference at the Jekyll Island Conference Center and was so impressed. What an open, inviting facility that draws on the beauty of the island through the architecture, decor and artwork displayed throughout. The food was wonderful (I want the recipe for the loaded baked potato salad!), classrooms comfortable, Wifi fully functional, and restrooms plentiful and clean. The proximity of the convention center to the nearby town center with shops and restaurants was nice, as was the temptation of the palm trees, beach and ocean just outside. Beautiful facility!

The Moore Museum houses the archives for the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church, an extensive Research Library, Gift Shop, and exhibits dedicated to the founding and history of Methodism, island history and so much more. The Arthur J. Moore Methodist Museum on the grounds of Epworth By the Sea is a Georgia treasure. Not only is admission free, the collection is historical and interesting. Anyone who appreciates history will enjoy a visit - especially a person of Faith. Of course, there is the expected information on the Wesley brothers but this museum goes much deeper and has interesting collections. I enjoyed looking at the international items from mission trips and the early 20th Century revival items. I strongly encourage a walk through if you are in St. Simons and especially if you are on property at Epworth.

This welcome center was our first stop upon arriving at St. Simons. We arrived at 4:15 p.m. and they close at 5 p.m. The lady that was working there was very nice and knowledgeable about the area. Plenty of brochures are available for attractions, historical visits, restaurants and surrounding places such as Jekyll and Sapelo Islands and Savannah. There is a small gift shop area within the welcome center if you wish to purchase merchandise. There are no restrooms in the welcome center. You will need to walk across the street to the brick library building to access restroom facilities. Our visit was during an uptick of Corona virus cases in Glynn County. Many people, including staff, were wearing masks and hand sanitizer was available.

The helpful staff answered questions we had about the confusing toll to get on to Jekyll. A nice 2-story tower allows a view of the marsh.

After being cooped up for three months, we were ready to get out of Dodge. We decided on St. Simon's Island because it is a comfortable three-hour drive from Hilton Head Island and because of the many historic sightseeing opportunities. Our first stop was the Golden Isles Welcome Center. I had researched the top attractions on the island; the center was a wonderful resource for brochures and maps on the top attractions we wanted to see. Laurie spent time with us answering questions and suggesting additional places for us to visit. The center has a nice gift shop with souvenirs and books about the area. We are especially interested in Eugenia Price, a St. Simon's historical novelist; her books are available at the center. One of the many attractions we were interested in were the "Tree Spirits," seven faces/images carved into trees. It is a scavenger hunt of sorts; clues lead you to find them on the island. The very first tree spirit is clearly marked in the welcome center parking lot. It is not to be missed. She is dedicated to the loggerhead turtles. The welcome center is strategically located within easy walking distance of the famed SSI Pier, Lighthouse Museum, and public pool. Restrooms are located directly across the street in the Postell Market, home to the SSI library. We scored some free books from a cart just outside of the library.
