Visited the Sylvania Wilderness and Ottawa National Forest on my first trip to the Western UP. Wow, what an experience. I did a solo kayak trip on the Ontonagon River that was arranged by Sylvania Outfitters just west of Watersmeet. Bob Zielinski, the owner of Sylvania Outfitters, has been in business for 40 years and is very knowledgeable about the wilderness as well as the history of the area. He spotted my vehicle at the end point of my kayak trip so that I could leave whenever I was done. On the ride to drop me off at the entry point for my trip in the town of Watersmeet, Bob gave me an extensive history lesson about the area, which was fascinating. I did a 7-mile kayak trip from Watersmeet to the Mex-i-Mine Falls in the Ottawa National Forest. The trip took me just under 4 hours to complete. There are several Class I and Class II rapids in the first half of the trip, where the river is quite narrow in some spots. The river widens a bit during the second half of the trip and includes fewer Class I rapids until you arrive at the end point, the Mex-i-mine Falls. Be alert for the falls and be sure to land prior to going over them unless you are a professional kayaker! I passed only 5 houses on the entire 7-mile paddle, so it's definitely a wilderness experience and very quiet. Highly recommended for both the river area itself and the Sylvania Outfitters kayak experience. The Sylvania Outfitters can organize canoe, kayak, fishing, and camping experiences for people of all ages and experience levels. They also offer a wide variety of equipment for sale or rent at their location.
