Split Bow Arch

Really spectacular arch formation on easy trail to reach it. Area is well maintained with plenty of parking at trail head. It’s a little off the beaten path as you head past bear creek horse camp to get there, but gravel road is well maintained. Make time to find this, well worth it.

McCreary County Museum

We rode the train to Barthell Coal Camp and then came here. The museum touched on many of the things we learned from the mine tour and added more depth to our learning experience.

Big South Fork Scenic Railway

2/13/2017 Note! Big South Fork Scenic Railway is under new ownership and management. Brand new website will be posted 2/20/2017 with complete 2017 schedule. We are not operating January, February and March. Excursions will resume April 1st. The K&T Special, our signature excursion, is a gorgeous three-hour scenic train ride from Stearns, Kentucky to the National Park Service's wonderfully restored Blue Heron Mining Community. In 2017 e'll also offer a variety of special event trains during the year, such as the Moon-shine Limited and South Fork Santa Express. This season we are spending nearly a million dollars on refurbishing cars and engines, and upgrades to the Depot and the railway. Stay tuned! -Diana Bybee and Sam Carpenter

Blue Heron Interpretive Center

Reviewed By Filipendulous - Louisville, United States

I was absolutely impressed with the outdoor exhibits along a beautiful trail at Blue Heron Mining Camp. We did not take the train (so expensive) as my mom did some research and found others saying not to do so - time at the camp was better without it. We enjoyed the park before and after the train was there, but it did get louder and more crowded when the train was there. The park is peaceful, clean, and well appointed. My mom is slightly disabled and the trail of exhibits was very slightly challenging to her on the first hill but otherwise good. There are no ramps on some of the exhibits and a few stairs to maneuver on each. She did get challenged by the stairs eventually (a lot of effort for her, even with a few) and listened to some of the exhibits but chose not to take the stairs to see them (they are visual and audio). The walk across the old track bridge is spectacular. The park ranger was not helpful and not into his job. I had to laugh when I was reading reviews previously written and saw that he was "rude". I did not experience rude, but I did experience lethargic and a lack of passion. This is too bad as this place has a lot to offer and he should be proud of it. I would go back to this place in a heartbeat.
