The tour guide was very informative. The tour walk is a rough primitive trail with unsure footing so wear decent walking shoes, bring water & sun protection. The tour meets at the museum & then buses you to the site. The museum was quite extensive & interesting too. And, it's right next to a playground so you can have a picnic & let your kids play a while if you have to wait for the tour.

Located in east central Arizona, this forest offers a physically challenging and stunningly beautiful landscape.
Friends suggested I try this route when heading from Tucson to Denver area. I got off I-10 onto US Highway 191 and headed north through Safford.
Before you get to the Apache National Forest, you will first pass through Clifton and an adjoining town that are mining towns ... boasting the Arizona Copper Mine (largest in the US, and maybe the world). A horrible, ugly, blight in the mountains. Be prepared to stop if they're blasting or decide to let dump trucks cross the road ... but the stops are brief.
After that, you enter the Apache National Forest and it's scenic highway. The views are spectacular as you wind up, down and around on the two-lane road. Heading north, I was mostly hugging the mountain ... the southbound lane mainly hugged the edge, with no guardrails.
Driving in February of '16, there was snow in the shaded areas and on the north sides of the mountains, but the road itself was good surface and totally clear. I did encounter one herd of mule deer by the side of the road (beautiful), and from Clifton to Alpine, I encountered only 5 vehicles (all heading south), but never saw another northbound car!
Simply a spectacularly beautiful drive. I'm sure I missed some elevation signs, but the highest one I remember seeing was over 8500 feet.

Four Museums: Casa Malpais Archeological, Rene Cushman - European antiques including a Rembrandt, White Mountain Historical Society, founding family, art gallery, theatre with locally produced videos of the region, rare butterfly collection, chamber of commerce, visitors center, and gift shops.
This old school has not only beautiful architecture and interior. Period pieces tell a story and fine art as well as local art add to the museum's charm.
There is one large collection which took my breath away, but you will have to see it for yourselves, I am not going to print a spoiler here.

While out exploring the area we saw a ten off for the Sipe Wilderness Area and decided to check it out. After traveling several miles down a dirt road we thought for sure we were lost and almost turned around. We kept going and about 6 miles in we saw the building for the visitor center. We got there close to closing time and most everyone had left. We had missed the annual butterfly festival by only a few hours.
A friendly gentleman who overseas the park greeted us and gave us a tour of the visitor center. He was a wealth of knowledge and gave us many insights that we would have otherwise missed. He toon us outside for the few and we sat on the back porch watching the hummingbirds come up the feeder.
We spent an hour there and had a lovely visit. The guy running the place loves visitors and I wish I could remember his name. We had a wonderful time. He gave us directions to head back to the main road down a forest road that had amazing views. Can't wait to return

The Kokopelli figures, as well as other historic artifacts, are found here.
This is a big dud! there isn't anything there when you get there. A real disapointment!
