The sheer size of this monument is absolutely incredible. It's designed to be walked through, with groupings of statues illustrating various periods of the First Bulgarian Empire. The quasi-cubist style is interesting in itself, and the symbolism adds a fascinating dimension - it's well worth the effort to learn a bit about the history. It was quite windy the day we visited, which only added to the intensity of this already-impressive place.

Just re-visited Madara rider after some time, it's as beautiful as I remember it from childhood years. Apart from the rider and the caves, there is now a museum as well as a movie about the rider (multilanguage, ask at the museum to start it in the movie hall right across the street).
At the top, just in front of the little cave with icons there was a guide giving information about the sight to everyone who inquired (free).
If you are visiting the rider, make sure to also visit nearby Pliska - the site of the first capital of Bulgaria, along with the stunning basilica.

A very impressive site where you really feel and see the history.
Recommended for families with children of school age. There you won't bump into crowds but will spend a peaceful quality time. Just turn on imagination. The history starts there at the iron age. Then there were Thracians, Romans, Bulgars and Turks.
Another impressive place of interest - a monument to the founders of Bulgaria, is only 10 min drive away.

Tombul Mosque (the real name is actually Sherif Halil Pasha mosque) is the most significant and the biggest on the Balkan Peninsula, outside Turkey. Tombul is the nickname it is widely known as and it comes from the shape of its dome and it means: chubby, fat.
The mosque has interesting exterior and architecture, and impressive interior and murals.
It is very possible that you won't be allowed inside but only the courtyard, but this depends. There have been renovation works for a long time, there is still staging around it.
It is definitely worth a visit even if you have visited the more spectacular mosques in Turkey or other Muslim country.
