The cafe is very good and the visitor centre kept us interested for about an hour. Well worth the drive from Canberra. Good for families with kids. Could combine with a visit to tidbinbilla nature reserve.

Gibraltar falls is about 45 mins drive south of Canberra locates in a National Park. There are many walks in this park but only two originating at the top of the falls. At the top of the falls there is a car park with toilets and tables. One walk is to the lookout. It is an easy less than 15mins return. The other one is 2km return (1hr) but takes you down to a campsite at the bottom of the falls (you can also access this campsite by car from the road). This walk is fairly vertical but the path is clear. I’d recommend good shoes and plenty of water. Snacks are not necessary to walk with but the area is remote and I’d have some in the car at least. People often swim in the pools near the lookout at the top of the falls. The water isn’t fast flowing but the rocks can be slippery and there are warning signs up. The fresh water is extremely cold but wonderful to cool off in after you have walked back up the hill.

There is evidence that Aboriginal people have lived in the Canberra region for at least 26,000 years. Walk the Birrigai Time Trail to the Birrigai Rock Shelter considered one of the oldest rock shelters in the region.

This was a great way for our children to experience snow for the first time at a fraction of the cost of taking them to Thredbo, snowy mountain ski resorts etc. We stayed in a cheap cabin in Canberra and drove 50-60 mins to Corin Forest. $20 for snow play, we bought toboggans and gear from Aldi. We went for the early morning 8:30 sessions which we thought were good, the snow was fresh and there was no problem getting a park. Our primary age kids and my partner also took ski lessons. Although the ski field is small it is perfectly adequate for first timers and they still had a ball. The ski teachers were helpful. After the lesson they had some time to free play skiiing down the slope. The “magic carpet” was easy for our 6yo to manage. Skiing package is more expensive than snow play- $100 per person for half day of lesson, ski hire and free play. But still, compared to the cost of accommodation, travel and lift passes etc in a ski resort, we could make our kids “dreams come true” in our budget. The pizzas from the cafe were yummy too and not overpriced considering they could choose to gouge you Lots to do in Canberra on the non snow days too
