I participated in a living history demonstration that was being recorded. I was impressed with the level of staff, the courteousness of the staff, the displays, the number of artifacts, and the size of the park, even though most of it is protected but not yet developed with touring trails and markers.

Cemeteries are great places to learn about a town's past as well as take in artistic monuments for our loved ones that pasted on. A great collection of impressive tombstones and sections of Civil War dead.

Old Log Courthouse

By Act 88 of 1843 DeSoto Parish was created out of Natchitoches and Caddo. The first meeting of parish officers was at Screamerville. Debate over the location of the permanent parish seat was settled by purchase of a quarter-section of land at the present site of Mansfield. This 1843 Log Courthouse is the only one of its type & the second oldest courthouse in Louisiana.

Silver Lake

Built between 1849 and 1855, Silver Lake is a tradition plantation-style house, boasting four tall columns, a wide porch, and six fireplaces. Though of that style it was never part of a large plantation. The house was built on huge piers and sills, which uniquely includes a tree, 48ft.x24in. that supports the front part of the house. It is estimated that the tree started growing in 1755!
