Jell-O Gallery Museum

Reviewed By Joe H - DeWitt, New York

I've rated this small museum average not because I didn't like it (I did), but because it isn't of the scope, scale, or professional quality of the many truly excellent museums I've visited. If you are in the area with an hour to kill, this is a good choice.

You won't see the museum from the street. When you arrive, look for Le Roy House, and pull into the driveway all the way to the back to the Little League field. Behind the Le Roy House you'll find an old stone building; the Jell-O museum is up a flight of steps. I didn't see a ramp or elevator, so this place might not be handicap accessible. I think that young children wouldn't enjoy this museum, but older ones might.

The Jell-O museum occupies part of one floor of this building. A staff member gave us an interesting ten-minute introductory talk; if you are offered this, accept the offer, as it provides good background and was worth the time. The exhibits tell about where gelatin comes from, who built the Jell-O business and how, and the marketing methods, flavors and promotional items associated with Jell-O through the years. There is a gift shop with many items reflecting the Jell-O theme.

The displays vary in quality and physical condition, and the overall display area isn't that large, but it gets the job done. This museum is run by the local Le Roy historical society, and it is easy to see that it is operating on limited funding. They're doing the best they can under the circumstances, so don't expect the polish you'd get from a corporately run facility.

There's a small display area in the basement which contains an old car and several horse-drawn vehicles including sleighs and carriages. There's no additional charge for this.

We enjoyed our visit and you probably will, too, as long as you don't have unrealistic expectations.

Genesee Country Village & Museum

Encompassing more than 600 acres, the Genesee Country Village & Museum is the largest living history museum in New York state. Located in small hamlet of Mumford, New York, about 20 miles (32 km) from Rochester, New York, USA. First opened to the public in 1976, the authentic 19th-century Historic Village features costumed historians breathing life into many of the 68 relocated and restored historic homes, farms, shops and other public buildings. When you visit during the regular season you will find various historic trades and craftspeople as well as historic cooking and agricultural demonstrations. GCV&M is also home to the John L. Wehle Art Gallery, the Genesee Country Nature Center, Silver Baseball Park, a pioneer farm, and several Heirloom Gardens. Numerous special events and classes are also offered throughout the year. Our regular open season runs from Mother's Day weekend through Columbus Day, with special programs in November, December and March.

The Genesee Country Village has one of the best collections of art, costume, decorative arts and historic architecture in New York State and deserves to be much better known and visited than it is. The problem is that the staff basically gears everything towards fourth graders and this is basically a place that parents bring their kids to dip candles and dress up in olden time outfits. The gift shop should be great but has a terribly low taste level as do the concessions.

It's unfortunate, as it has some incredible buildings with incredible collections of decorative arts that should have a much more devoted visitation from discerning adults. They really need to call the Farmer's Museum in Cooperstown and have them come and redo everything.

That said, there's a great gallery of Taos School paintings, an incredible textile and clothing collection and some of the most beautiful Greek Revival buildings you can imagine. It's just of I90 and you'll have it to yourself. Go. You'll be amazed.

Charlotte Pier

Reviewed By Larry W - Rochester, New York

The Charlotte Pier is another nice place to walk when visiting the Ontario Beach State Park. It is very long (perhaps a quarter to a third of a mile long) with a lighthouse at the end. It's very beautiful, with cool breezed on hot days. I would recommend this to anyone, whether they live in the area or not.
