Throughout the years, Henri Le Sidaner transformed a neglected orchard into a wonderful full-scale masterpiece of around 43,000 square feet. From the rose garden, wall-walk, tower, pergola, balustrade and statues to the little studio in the former barn where he made his sketches, the artist conceived it all minutely. To day, those gardens are labelled as "remarkable gardens". They are separate from each other, spread out over three stories and connected to each other by steep trails winding through the trees.
Driving for less than an hour through the rolling lush French countryside from north of Chantilly,I reached 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de France' – Gerberoy - a dream village for lovers of flowers and roses. A walk in this well-kept medieval fairy tale village of just 50 residents is sheer joy: winding cobblestoned streets, 17th and 18th centuries old half-timbered and brick houses, well-maintained climbing roses, wisterias, plants and flowers by thousands. Gerberoy is also the home of the renowned painter Henri Le Sidaner, who lived here in the early 1900s and started growing roses not only in his own garden but throughout the village. Henri's green-thumb and mission to brighten the town with beautiful flowers paid off as the villagers, in turn, began to grow their own. And, rest they say is history. Today everything in Gerberoy, including the brightly painted houses, rose garden, roofs and alleys, have been well-preserved as they were when Henri Le Sidaner painted it. And, on the third Sunday of June every year, a rose festival is celebrated in his honour.
