Lake Metigoshe State Park

For me being around water, trails, trees, wildlife, birds....well, Lake Metigoshe State Park supplies all that. Seems like every time I visit there's a new "surprise" or something "different". I enjoy spending time at the South and North Hill Picnic area. This visit I was greeted by a doe and her two yearlings and an American Bald Eagle flew over just after my arrival. I went into the campground and found a portion of the Old Oak Trail that I wanted to hike. It went out to Oriole Island. I had heard there were loons there but unfortunately I didn't see them. I was lucky to see other song birds in the trees though and chipmunks and a snake. This trip I didn't stay in the park but I had stayed in the Cormorant Cabin previously and enjoyed it very much. Sunrises over School Section Lake can be really amazing. I hope you enjoy the photos I'm including.

I saw somewhere that there was a Stonehenge on the Prairie in this area so I had to find it for myself. I'm not much into astronomy/astrology but this location is beautiful and the views are breathtaking. It's worth the detour off the highway.

Tommy Turtle Statue

Take a back seat Grand Canyon!! Move over Yellow Stone! Let me tell you about this worthless pile of crap turtle riding a snowmobile statue. You see, when given the option of an indoor swimming pool that people of all ages could enjoy OR a monstrosity of a turtle statue, everyone voted for the f****** turtle. Why? Because won’t it just be a hoot to see a turtle riding a snowmobile in the summer? Wouldn’t it just be kooky to see a turtle riding a snowmobile in the fall? What a silly goose this turtle is. Just riding his snowmobile in the spring! Now I know what your thinking. Does it light up? Does it have stairs inside that you can climb and see great views of the Turtle Mountains? Does it have a caramel center? The answer to these questions is no! None of the above. However, it does have graffiti that resembles human genitalia. Great fun for the whole family. Once you’re here, you can walk around it. You can stare at it. You can even let your dog pee on it. WHAT A VACATION! Sure to be one to scrapbook about for years to come. Make sure to take tens of photos! They say not to climb it. But the rascals of Bottineau have defied the laws of the land and done just that. I assume to make such genitalia graffiti as mentioned here. This...this idea somehow managed to get more votes than an indoor pool. Let that sink in for a minute or two. This...over an indoor pool!
