West End Theatre

The West End Theatre was originally built as a Baptist church in 1905. After changing to a Federated Church in the 1950s, the congregation added classrooms, a kitchen, and restrooms onto the back of the building. In 1985 the congregation, having grown too small, gave the building to the Blackwater R-2 School across the street. In 1996, Jay Turley, a Blackwater native and distinguished play-writer, formed a theatre troupe of community volunteers and the Blackwater School agreed to let them use the building. Jay Turley later bought the building from the school and donated it to the Blackwater Preservation Society as the West End Theatre. Jay Turley passed in 2004, but his legacy of plays, vaudevilles, and concerts lives on in Blackwater. Check the events page on the Blackwater Preservation Society website for upcoming performances at the West End Theatre!

This is a lovely old church that has been converted into a theater/music venue. In the past it held several theatrical productions each year, but now it is used more as a musical venue. Each year Bob Milne, who is one of the premier ragtime pianist performs a concert there. To hear someone like him perform in such a small and intimate setting is really some thing special. There are of course other shows performed at the West End as well, and what ever it is, it is always a nice place to enjoy it.

The original Blackwater Depot was built in 1888 by the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The Depot was a busy and vital place in its early years. It was a ticket office for the railroad, a telegraph office, and station to handle all mail and freight going through the area. As the trains and railway systems were updated, the depot was used less frequently. Eventually, there was no more need for the building. It fell into disrepair and was torn down in 1973. In 2008, this replica was rebuilt in its place by the Blackwater Preservation Society. It is now used as a community center that hosts both public and private events.

Mid-Missouri Museum of Independent Telephone Pioneers

The Mid-Missouri Museum of Independent Telephone Pioneers is a unique little museum in Blackwater, Missouri. The two-story brick building was built in 1907 as the Bank of Blackwater, but during the Great Depression the bank had to close its doors. The building was later used as a church, grocery store, and telephone company. Telephone switchboards were operated in the office and customers came in to pay their phone bills. The telephone industry made new developments until switch boards were no longer needed and the office closed. In 1997, Harold Jones of the Mid-Missouri Telephone Company donated the building to the Blackwater Preservation Society to become a museum he called ‘Mid-Missouri Museum of Independent Telephone Pioneers’. He also donated his collection of old telephones, switchboards, and other memorabilia. Today, his collection and other items can be viewed in the museum. Visitors are welcome free of charge, but donations to Blackwater Preservation Society are appreciated!

We spent the weekend at the Iron Horse hotel and the telephone museum was at the other end of the quaint Main street. The whole downtown feels like something from a Norman Rockwell painting, and this museum fits in like a little slice of nostalgia. You probably won't spend a tremendous amount of time in the museum, but it is well worth going in to see. Especially since it is free to just walk into and look around. It will definitely bring back memories of the simpler times long before we became slaves to our cellphones. In the middle of the street in front of the museum is a cool old windmill that was used to pump up water in the old days. The water was for people to water their horses when they drove a wagon or buggy into town.
