There’s not much in Jhansi, but I had to come anyway to see Jhansi Fort for all the stories I’ve heard about Lakshmi Bai, the warrior Queen of Jhansi. There weren’t many guides offering their services here and I actually joined an Indian couple. This turned out to be fortuitous as the guides English was only okay and the Indian couple did most of the commentary for me. Anyway, it was great to hear the stories of Lakshmi Bai, especially the hair-raising feat of the Rani Lakshmi Bai making her escape on her horse by jumping over the fort walls. There’s a sign that marks the spot and looking at how steep and high the spot was, I’m pretty sceptical, but meh.

The Rani Mahal, Jhansi was actually the palace of Lakshmi Bai. The Palace has now been refurbished into a museum that has carefully treasured the remnants of history and also the little artifacts that belonged to the period of Rani Lakshmi Bai.
