This scenic desert area is good for hiking and other outdoor activities.
This was a great stop and easy to get to. From the Baymont Hotel, Barstow, take a left on Main St, another left on N 1st St and another left on Irwin Rd. It's about 8 miles. Drive 3 miles on a dirt, washboard road and then take a right into Rainbow Basin. It's very easy to get to and well marked. Once in the Basin, you will wander through a 5 mile dirt road through the formations. The road is good, any can can make it. The formations were so beautiful. Different colors and shapes. I went at sunset and the lighting made it interesting. Definitely a good stop of an hour or two.

Budget friendly ($10 each for a double feature!). Excellent visual and sound quality. Easy to find and easy in and out. Quiet and courteous patrons. Outside food is allowed in but there is an excellent snack bar with a large variety of options. On the night we went the other patrons were quiet and coureous. The owner/ manager is friendly, funny and easy on the eyes. Lawn chairs are alllowed outside of cars. We didn't have to sit through previews and enjoyed some fun retro drive in commercials for the snack bar and snack items. The bathrooms were clean. That part was especially fun. We went last night and it was cloudy. Barstow has minimal light pollution so any time we get a chance to sit out and watch the night sky we do. We will go back next week when it is clear so we can also enjoy the night sky. This is a lovely place to visit. The only cons are that it would be nice if the ground was paved and the bathrooms update. However, that costs money so when you go please buy a lot of snack items. The snack counter employees are efficient almost as friendly as their boss, so please tip them. Going to a drive in theater is such a treat and I wish there were more drive-in movie theaters around.

I learned more about MJ Colter, and the AT&SF railroad here. Well done museum and free! I bought gifts for train crazed grandson as well as a metal poster of the famous Colorado Hanging Bridge. A hidden delight!
