This small church is located alone, next to the ocean, on the open basalt flows of the Reykjanes Peninsula and the area around the church provides a scenic area of open, dark sky perfect for the viewing of the aurora borealis. We were fortunate enough to witness a display of epic beauty late on April 4 and continuing into the wee hours of the 5th in 2018. (Delta misdirected my luggage so the attached photos were made without the benefit of my missing tripod.) This small Lutheran church was originally established in the middle of nowhere along the southern coast of Iceland in the 12th century when a group of sailors trying to reach shore in a storm prayed for a safe return and promised that if they did survive they would build a church at the location of their landing. An angel then appeared and guided them through the surf and unseen reefs to safety. Keeping their word, they built Strandarkirkja for which many miracles have been attributed to and is one of the richest churches in Iceland as many donations arrive in the hopes one’s prayers will be heard.

A UNIQUE ATTRACTION CLOSE TO REYKJAVIK Visiting The Icelandic Horse Park, you will be introduced to the unique story of the Icelandic horse, its distinctive features, and its important role in Icelandic history and culture. You will also enjoy great Icelandic food at the restaurant. The result is a magical theatrical experience that emphasizes the Icelandic horse's special features and pays tribute to its historical relationship with humans throughout Iceland's history. At the end of the show we offer a behind the scenes guided walking tour through our equestrian facility with knowledgeable local guides. Alhestar offers horseback riding tours in Iceland. We’re located 30 km outside Reykjavik and offer pickups upon request. We’re located in Reykjavik but our horse riding facilities are in a small town called Thorlakshofn. We have decades of experience working and traveling with Icelandic horses. We will bring you from Reykjavik and back, for our all-inclusive tours.
I did a midnight sun horse trek on 20 June. Due to Civid-19 and tourists only just trickling into the country I was the only person. Eric picked me up from Central Reykjavik and did the 40 drive to the stables. Magnus was my guide and although he did not speak any English he was charming and a delight to trek along the lava beds and the cliff coastline. I was called beforehand so they know level you are and to give you the right horse. These are two genuine guys who are try hard to please. I was lucky enough to be invited back for coffee and cheese even though it was now 1.30 am. A lovely experience that will stay for me forever.
