Bedford County Visitors Bureau

Bedford County is located in South Central Pa. The countryside is beautiful, prices are affordable, the people are friendly and there are many family oriented activities to enjoy. The pace is a little slower than most places, and we like it that way! We will strive to be the most helpful, friendly visitors bureau in Pennsylvania, offering pleasant service to every visitor who calls or visits our office. We will take the time with every visitor and caller to make them feel like a friend instead of a customer. We'll promptly respond to everyone who takes the time to call or write to our office. We will never forget that we exist to serve the visitor and to effectively promote our beautiful area. Came in twice and spoke with three men who were so nice and friendly and eager to share all of their wonderful knowledge of the history of Bedford County. I think it was Bob, Dennis and Adam? My wife and I had a wonderful conversation and learned so many interesting things. Next time we will do the walking tour. We look forward to living near Bedford County and having the ability to ask any questions we have regarding this beautiful part of Pennsylvania. Everyone we encountered made us feel at home, even though we presently live on the west coast. I would strongly recommend this visitor center as these gentlemen were extremely knowledgeable and so very friendly. My wife and I are looking forward to coming back.

Bedford County Covered Bridge Driving Tour

Bedford County is blessed with 14 covered bridges. Built approximately 100 years ago by craftsmen who worked almost entirely by hand, these structures withstand the rain, snow and hard use of the traveling public. The county's bridges range in length from the 136 foot Herline Bridge near Manns Choice, PA to the 56 foot Palo Alto bridge south of Hyndman. Twelve spans are Burr-truss bridges, named after their designer, Theodore Burr. These bridges are held in place by a set of trusses that interact with the arch that spans the length of the bridges, creating added strength. A lot of people ask, "Why did they cover the bridges?". One answer is that wooden bridges with exposed superstructures can rot ... covering and roofing them protects them from the weather so they'll last longer.

We spent a beautiful sunny Saturday driving the loop to see 9 of the 14 bridges. We included lunch at Jean Bonnet Tavern, the Mount Ararat scenic overlook and a quick stop to Koontz Coffee Pot... total of 6 hours. There is a bathroom located by Shawnee Lake if you need to stop (just an FYI). Use the GPS coordinates on the covered bridges map you can request by calling 800-765-3331 or stop at visitors center to pick up. The bridges are not all marked on the roads you will travel, you need the map and you won’t always have the best cell service in a few spots. We saw bridges 5-13 on the map which is basically a loop. Started at 9 RYOT and continued to 5 Herline, stopped for lunch then finished with 13-10 in that order. So many great pictures and it’s mid October with many weeks left of changing leaves this year. I recommend going soon!!

The views along this drive were simply spectacular. Rolling farmland and trees as far as the eye could see. Highly recommend on a clear day.

The spa was beautiful and very well run. Upon entering the Spa you are given robe and slippers and escorted to the Bath Rituals area. This is separate for male and female. The attendant took me through and explained everything on the Ladies side. Theres a Changing Area with lockers & private dressing rooms; a Shower area that has two private showers; An entire wall of towels and amenities- disposable hair brushes, dryers, makeup remover, lotions, shower caps, hair gel and spray, deodorant, Qtips, wipes, mouthwash etc etc.Theres also a private Ladies bathroom. The “bath ritual” itself is comprised of luxe showers, steam room, large hot pool, and cold plunge pool. Afterwards, we met up in the quiet Co-ed Relaxation lounge.I had booked a Therapeutic massage and Maple Sugar Scrub (DO THIS!). Hubby did hand massage and brief mani/pedi. Services were great and the personnel are easy going and friendly. After our appointments we again relaxed in the quiet area for a little snooze before going to our separate areas to dress or shower. You could even do the Bath Rituals again if desired. We were there midweek and it was not busy at all.

My wife and I loved our experience at Briar Valley tasting room. I would highly recommend. The wines were great and the staff stayed late to complete our tasting. We enjoyed the Chardonnay.
