Love culture, not crowds? Leave the bustle of Belize City for quieter Dangriga, at the end of the Hummingbird Highway. The town is a suitable base for exploring the Stann Creek district: visit the Maya Center and the world's first jaguar preserve, explore the beach and try snorkeling at the reef a few miles out.

This reserve was established to help protect the endangered jaguar and other species native to Belize.
We thoroughly enjoyed our day trip to Cockscomb Basin, with a short hike in to swim at the waterfalls and then a relaxing tube down the lazy river in the jungle. Our guide, Benedicto Choc from the Maya Center Village, was extremely knowledgeable about the area, pointing out various native flora and sharing local Mayan lore. He can also tell you where to spot toucans and would be an excellent guide for birdwatching or hikes in to Victoria Peak. Thank you for a great day!

The Maya Center Mayan Museum is a culturally interactive museum, that entertains and teach real Mayan culture. We do hands on demonstration, such as tortilla making, Cultural Dance training, Coffee making and now Chocolate making that is more fun as you get to do it your self and eat the chocolate you make! Now, that's fun.
If you are headed through Maya Center, in Dangriga or even Hopkins, Maya Center Museum is a must stop, Julio and his family are gracious hosts who welcome all like family. They happily hosted my study abroad groups hear after year for meals, museum tours, and even chocolate demonstrations. Julio is a charismatic host and was willing to accommodate dietary needs and our travel schedules. The museum is well-put-together and includes interactive portions, perfect for student groups (including tortilla making, cacao milling, and sugar cane crushing) It has been a pleasure to keep in touch with Julio after many years and see how his business has grown.

Interesting home grown business. Tour was short and informative. They have samples at the end. Very reasonable prices in the store.
