Nyiragongo is a beautiful stratovolcano that features the world’s largest lava lake. Treks to the summit of Nyiragongo volcano begin at the Kibati patrol post. Park rangers lead all treks and porters (unaffiliated with the park) are available for hire. The time required to reach the summit depends on the average fitness of each group, but typically takes 4 – 6 hours.
This is a definite bucket list activity. No where else in my travels have I seen a scene where you are staring at fire but freezing in the same moment

I used Ali Vazir and his company to begin the Congo trip. Because of problems obtaining a visa for inland travel to the Congo, we began by securing a KahuziBiega Gorilla Trek (very beautiful) and applied for a visa in Bukavu. Where Ali shone is obtaining the inland visa. Many operators told me it was impossible to get this inland Visa on arrival and I'd need to apply in my home country, but Ali made it work with a short detour in Bukavu. Also, Ali managed to mail a gift for my mother's birthday out of the Congo. Lodges selected were all top notch - a welcome in the chaotic world of travel to DRC.

Our primary goal is to promote a high-quality visitor experience in an environment which benefits an increasing number of local people directly, as our partners, yet without compromising the very assets upon which the destination depends; namely, a spectacularly beautiful natural environment amid a largely unspoilt cultural environment

Virunga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, on the border of Uganda and Rwanda. Virunga is Africa’s oldest national park and is also the continent’s most biologically diverse protected area. The park’s 7800 square kilometers (3000 square miles) includes forests, savannas, lava plains, swamps, erosion valleys, active volcanoes, and the glaciated peaks of the Rwenzori mountains. Virunga is home to about a quarter of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas. The park’s two other Great Ape species, eastern lowland Grauer’s gorillas and chimpanzees, make Virunga the only park in the world to host three taxa of Great Apes. Another prominent inhabitant of the park is the Okapi, an endangered species that resembles a zebra but is more closely related to the giraffe. Large colonies of hippopotami, forest and savanna elephants, lions, and numerous rare bird species can also be found in the park.
My husband and I just returned from a week-long trip to DRC. We did two gorilla treks in Virunga National Park during our visit. The experience was amazing. We visited two gorilla families - each with babies and multiple silverbacks. The gorillas were active and we were able to see them eat, interact with each other, breastfeed their babies, and generally move about the park. We felt completely safe the entire time we were there as the ranger guide, Julian, and trackers were very knowledgeable and obviously comfortable with the gorilla families. I hope to be able to visit again soon! It was an incredibly rewarding and memorable experience.
