Wonderful wooded walk with monasteries and ancient sites along the fast flowing river. Easier route is downhill from Dimitsana - and ideally getting a taxi back.

The Holy Monastery of the Philosopher

Reviewed By IncaAngel - Ames, United States

Possibly the beauty and ancient dignity of Paleo Moni Filosofou is in the fact it lies in complete ruins. I am glad we had a local to help us decipher this ancient monastery. Don't go here expecting the restoration of the many other monasteries in the area. If adventurous, it is possible to look inside what must have been the ancient chapel, complete with a few remnants of frescos. I was saddened to see that someone had actually written graffiti across a priceless fresco. Please treat this site with as much reverence and care given to those monasteries watched over carefully by caretakers to this day.
