This bustling street from the cathedral down to the market is a lovely one to walk on because of all the things to see along the way. Of course the clock tower is the main attraction especially when the sun light catches it and it glistens. There are plenty of half timbered buidings painted in various colours to see. The street does get busy especially near the clock.

It is fantastic to walk around this lovely streets and take in the beautiful medieval architecture. Most of the shops are very interesting antique dealers and some of the stuff on sale is interesting and some very weird. The art shops are the best.

The clock is very ornate and chimes every 15 minutes. There i s a lot of gold on it and bright colours and hangs over the cobbled street in the old town.

While my title might seem like a contradiction, it is not. The city itself is quaint, though not so small, with wonderful places to see and eat. Heck, it's the medieval quarter of the cultural capital of Normandy. Notre Dame Cathedral sits here (actually, a favorite subject of Monet's), and it is worth a visit there to see the awesome interior and the burial place of Richard the Lionheart. As you stroll through town, you'll also see the ornate Astronomical Clock, supposedly the oldest in the world. What's melancholic about Rouen is the spot you can visit where Joan of Arc was sentenced to death and the Place du Vieux Marche, where she was burned at the stake. A statue of Joan marks the place of the pyre. She is one of France's greatest heroes, and is, of course, noted as a saint. Even if you've never had any particular interest in her before, this is intoxicating history, worth learning about. If you're visiting the area, don't pass by Rouen; you won't be disappointed.
