Florence is an art historian’s dream. The Galleria dell'Accademia bursts with works by Michelangelo, who is entombed within the frescoed walls of the Basilica di Santa Croce. Budding photographers can snap pics of the Ponte Vecchio bridge, and serious shoppers can spend a blissful afternoon wandering the shops of Piazza Santo Spirito. Tuscan cuisine pays homage to the region’s bounty. Swipe a hunk of crusty bread across a pool of local olive oil and you’ll be instantly transported to your happiest place.

Considering that this was our first trip to Florence, my husband was very concerned when he learned that his business meeting was several miles away from the more central hotel that I had booked for our stay. Imagine our surprise (and his relief) when we stepped out in front of our hotel to wait for the taxi that wasn't due to arrive for another fifteen minutes, only to find that the taxi was already there. Our driver, Oslo44, was also super accommodating. Not only did he speak English (which rather surprised me); he was more that happy to take me on a tour of the city after dropping my husband at his meeting. He was also able to advise me - quite knowledgeably - about where I might go shopping for a purse, shoes, and a new briefcase for my husband. The little candies and the nice car made me feel more like I was in a limo than a taxi.
