Seaham, formerly Seaham Harbour, is a small town in County Durham, situated 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Sunderland and 13 miles (21 km) east of Durham. It has a small parish church, St Mary the Virgin, with a late 7th century Anglo Saxon nave resembling the church at Escomb in many respects. St Mary the Virgin is one of the 20 oldest surviving churches in the UK. Seaham is currently twinned with the German town of Gerlingen.

This is a beautiful and moving sculpture in the centre of Seaham. At the moment the area around it is cordoned off due to Covid.

Brilliant Sculpture in metal of WW1 Soldier Tommy and the Parking Area Barrier Rail Fence has more Memories of those that served in the conflict. All overlooking the Sea with plenty of Parking and opposite the famous award winning Clean Bean Restaurant which has plenty of choice on the Menu or just a Coffee or Brew if that's what you are after - Plenty of other stuff to do over a few hours in Seaham.

Moving to see all the poppies and wooden crosses displaying the names of those loved and lost, the area is surrounded by benches depicting images of poppies, silhouettes of soldiers, with such a fabulous view of the coast.

I visit the church grounds of St Mary’s often because I have a few relatives buried in the church yard, the oldest from the 1700’s. My great grandfather is also buried there. The church itself is only open for 2 months of the year so it worth planning a visit for then. One year, my sister, nephew and myself, were lucky enough to visit at the right time and meet the wonderful ladies and gentlemen that look after the church. I’m not sure if they consistently pick the same two months every year to open so worth checking before going.
