Jagannath Puri Temple

Reviewed By padmaja111 - Hyderabad, India

This temple is different from others because, here the idols of deities are not made with stone or metal but with wood of a selected tree and are changed every twelve years when adhika ashasda masa comes, with an elaborate ceremony called navakalebara. Every year Famous Radhotsava takes place which is attended by lakhs of people. Every day, 56 varieties of food are prepared in pots and offered to deities And this Jagannath prasadam one must take during visit. Like wise many aspects of this temple are unique and one is very fortunate to have darshan of Lord. One should not take mobile s or big hand bags as monkeys snatch and go up the gopuram. Sometimes crowd is more sometimes very less. If you want to get best out of your visit, engage one panda as guide on your first visit, he will give you all details and in the second visit you be on your own and explore 20 to 25 small shrines around main temple. Have ten rupee notes to be offered. Buy prasadam at office for 100 or 200 rupee s and offer to Lord and take home to be distributed. This will stay for 10 to 15 days. Buy Anna prasadam in temple near kitchen for 50 rupees for person either share or consume then and there. It is as holy as Ganga jal. Visit early morning and evening also. Anna prasadam you will get only after 12 pm but dry prasadam from office any time. Evening around 6 pm, flag changing ceremony is worth watching. There many more things to know. One is really blessed to get the opportunity to visit this place.
