In Santander, enjoy the beautiful beaches of Playa de la Magdalena and El Sardinero, a historic city center, and an epic planetarium, all while breathing in glorious coastal air. Of course, there are plenty of gorgeous Gothic cathedrals that will impress and inspire.

The hermitage, which only opens for mass and for the annual celebrations, is a very simple building that was constructed in the 17th century to house the statue of Nuestra Señora del Mar (Our Lady of the Sea), Santander's much-loved patron saint.

There is the cathedral itself - open 10-1 and 4-7.30 - and 2 euros only (1 euro for seniors) - then the cloisters which are beautiful - and the church in the crypt below the cathedral - the Church of Santo Christo - entrance free - where there are many interesting artefacts including the relics of the two early Christian martyrs San Emeterio (after whom city is named) and San Celedonio - all worth the visit. For me the church was the most interesting but the cathedral has some lovely stained glass windows behind the high altar and an intersting mural and look up at the tops of the pillars for the carvings. And all very peaceful and still.
