The oldest Gothic church in Vipiteno, built in 1399 within the main building of the Old Hospital, it is one of the best kept. The frescoes in this church were painted in 1402 by Hans from Brunico an his brothers, and the main moments of Christ's life are shown: the Annunciation, the Gethsemane, Juda's kiss, Christ and Pilate, the crowning with thorns, the Flagellation, Christ's resurrection, and the final judgement. These frescoes, influenced by Giotto's style, are just stunning, and they are a "must see" in Vipiteno. On the side of the church there is another church barely decorated, with a Baroque altar and an excellent wooden statue of St. Sebastian, the city patron saint.

Needed refreshments after Cascade Di Stanghe. Parked on the outskirts, nice walk into town. Be aware that shops and some cafes close at 1 pm until 3.30 pm. Good for 2 hours

Torre delle Dodici or "Zwoelver Turm" is located at the head of Via Citta Nuova. Exactly at 12 Noon every day, the ageless tower strikes 12... and alerts everybody it's lunchtime or "Mahlzeit!" The tower has been around for 5 centuries, but the old clock tower was rebuilt... relatively recently, in the late 1800s. The clock is more or less the centerpiece of New City or Citta Nuova... the main/shopping district of Vipiteno (aka Sterzing). Along the main pedestrian way leading to the tower, you will find a variety of quaint shops, outdoor cafes, hotels and restaurants. We spent 5 hours walking, browsing, shopping and dining in Citta Nuova. In the center of the via is a beer garden and open-air market. If you wish to sample genuine Alto Adigen specialties, this is the place to be. The various shops and restaurants are upscale, but not too pricey. You will be able to find filling menu of the day meals for 10 - 11 Euros. Stick around until noon, and you will be treated to the melody of "Zwoelver." I highly recommend a morning or afternoon taking in the sights at Torre delle Dodici.
