The quaint West Coast, South Island town of Franz Josef is named after the Franz Josef Glacier. Which in turn, legend has it, is named for a girl whose lover died in a fatal fall. She cried so much that her tears pooled, eventually freezing into a block of ice. The magic of this fable isn’t lost on the town or the tourists who flock to the tragically romantic site.

24 spacious, well appointed, ground floor studio and family units. Central village location with spectacular alpine and rainforest views, walk to restaurants, shops and attractions. King, queen, deck and spa units with kitchenettes, ensuite bathrooms, Sky TV, DVD players and complimentary DVD library. Spa pool, guest laundry and activities booking service.
Spent three nights there and we loved it. very close to shopping and easy walking, only five minutes or less. The manager was very good to us, he tried to get us cheap helicopter trips but could not. there was not much traffic as to the virus. But we loved the town worth visiting and spending time there.

My wife and I and our two daughters spent 1 night at Glacier View Motel. The accommodation was spacious and clean and consisted of 2 bedrooms with a queen bed in one room and 2 single beds in the other room. There was also a separate open plan lounge and kitchen area. The beds were comfortable and the views of the nearby mountains are lovely. The location of the motel is good and it is a short 10 minute drive to the starting point of the scenic walk to the Franz Josef Glacier. Overall, the Motel was an enjoyable and convenient stop-over.
