September 8, 2021 Madelene Haan

Transylvania is a historical region in today's central Romania. Bound on the east and south by its natural borders, the Carpathian mountain range, historical Transylvania extended westward to the Apuseni Mountains. The term sometimes encompasses not only Transylvania proper, but also the historical regions of Crișana and Maramureș, and occasionally the Romanian part of Banat.

In a single day you will see famous landmarks (like the Merry Cemetery, Barsana and Sapanta-Peri monasteries or the Memorial Museum from Sighet) but also places off the beaten path: a local market, little known artisans, the group of unique water mills (including the only water powered fulling and carding mills from Europe still in working condition and daily use for local community needs, without any museum or tourist purposes), the last medieval hay fields and meet the local self sufficient farmers. The tour is designed for 2-4 people, but singles are welcome (supplement charge).

Inclusions: All Fees and Taxes

Exclusions: Snacks and drinks

Toefil was a wonderful guide, very patient with the kids and was able to adapt the tour to fit our requests and our schedule. We got to see a working fulling mill powered by a water wheel, the beautiful village of Breb, and we visited with a local historian and a local craftsman and tasted some homemade spirits. We visited the Sapanta-Peri Monastery and the Merry Cemetery. It was a great day, and we loved all the local stories!

We had a great offroad experience with Carpathian Escapes. Our host Istvan was an amazing driver and guide, giving us all the details of the places we visited. The area is quite amazing (the hills, the views, the people). It was really worth traveling from Bucharest to try this experience.

5. ArtCrawl

Universitatea Sapientia, Strada Matei Corvin 4, Cluj-Napoca 400000, Romania Helga Thies

Cluj has a bustling contemporary art scene and great works are hidden among the narrow streets of the city. That’s the thing, though – they are quite hidden. Certain places can be difficult to find in a city you’re visiting, information is not always available in English or up to date. The tour can take us to exhibitions, performances, studios & other events like fairs, movie screenings, workshops, usually in alternative, unconventional spaces. ArtCrawl is a personalised tour, available by booking, that encourages out-of-towners to discover the diverse local contemporary art scene; a guide to the exhibition spaces, as well as the art - sharing knowledge about the art and artists is also a part of the crawl. After booking a crawl and sharing your interests and curiosities, I will organise a walking tour through exhibitions, performances and other cultural events of the independent art scene. Studio visits can also be arranged. Get in touch to set a convenient time for the tour.

Inclusions: English, Romanian, German guide
