The 5 Best Historic Sites in Bastille, Ile-de-France

September 18, 2021 Moriah Teneyck

Lingering over pain au chocolat in a sidewalk café, relaxing after a day of strolling along the Seine and marveling at icons like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe… the perfect Paris experience combines leisure and liveliness with enough time to savor both an exquisite meal and exhibits at the Louvre. Awaken your spirit at Notre Dame, bargain hunt at the Marché aux Puces de Montreuil or for goodies at the Marché Biologique Raspail, then cap it all off with a risqué show at the Moulin Rouge.

Being an early riser (regardless of time zone) and being absolutely thrilled to be in Paris, I was out and on the rain drenched darkened and deserted nearly empty streets by 0600h. Imagine my thrill and excitement when I came down Rue St. Antoine and came face-to--face with a big tower monument with a gold statue on top. Of the traffic circle google notes it on the map as "bustling square where prison once stood." Being a 21st century kind of person, I sought shelter from drizzly rain and read by iphone on-the-spot about this fantastic monument and its historical significant location. I simply loved discovering this historical monument in the pre-dawn mist. What a site! What a discovery! What living history!.... [did you get the idea from my previous posts that I love being at historical places and I love seeing historical artifacts?] Of course I ventured through the hectic and busy traffic circle despite that early hour and explored all four sides of the monument- I was all alone. I read the sides and noted the year- 1830. I admired the flying gold statue on top. There were barriers all around due to construction (or crowd control for events). All-in-all. it was an amazing and exciting experience... but maybe more explanations please of what happened there and diagrams, schematic photos, etc.... one shouldn't have to get to a historical site and open google to read and understand what it is, why it is, how it is, and the historical circumstances and significance.... Of course i brought my wife here- she was overwhelmed to see it too.... we used the Bastille metro station a number of times. ... Did I write that i wads thrilled to see the actual keys to the Bastille (now under glass) at the nearby National Archives)? .... did I write that i found the glitzy gaudy Bastille Opera House building (and especially the screaming glaring commercial bright blinding digital advertising board) to be distracting to the historical experience of being at the monument... even at 0600H? Read my review of that next.... Hey- here are my photos....enjoy. And now that I've written this review, I can sleep without having to dream about writing it- so please reward my efforts by giving this and my other reviews a "like."
