Agia Irini Gorge

The four-hour walk through the gorge takes you through beautiful, uncrowded scenery.

We hiked from the top to the bottom. My wife and I did it with our 2 and 5 year olds. The 5 year old loved it. The 2 year old had to be carried most of the way. It took 3.5 hours with a picnic stop. All rockfall has been dealt with and the way is clearly marked. The bar at the bottom called a taxi. Wait time was only 10 minutes and cost a was 35 euros for a 7 seater.

The Gorge of Aradena

Really worth a visit, the drive up the switchbacks to the gorge gives stunning views along the coastline. The entrance at the top of the gorge is by a 138 metre high rickety bridge (where there is bungee jumping at the weekend) and you then walk through a beautiful old village (much of it in ruins) The gorge itself is beautiful with high-sided walls and great views.

Anydri Gorge

The track into the gorge from Gialiskari beach is really easy to spot and is pretty much at the bottom of the hill between the two sections of the beach with the sides of the gorge pretty much pointing to the entrance and if walking from top to bottom then the gorge is signed from the Old School/Kafeneio sto Scholeio taverna in Anidri. When you reach the track there were regular red painted arrows on rocks to highlight the route to take although it was a little worrying that these stopped just as I reached the skull of a goat on top of a rock. Was this a sign for all who entered further to do so at their own peril (lol). Even more disconcerting was the next sight to greet me round the next corner, as even though I think I am quite good at climbing and scrambling goats are better so to see the carcass of a goat impaled across a rock where it clearly had fallen made me decide to stick to the path and not even think about veering off it :-). There were now small stone cairns to indicate the route to take although on the way up it wasn't always clear which way to go so I did come to the odd dead end as well as having to scramble up rocks that I am sure I didn't have to. There is just one small section where there is a rope and a rope ladder to get up one rock formation which is no doubt a lovely waterfall in the winter. The scenery up either side of the gorge was lovely and I recognised the cliffs above gorge to my left where I had stood the year before looking down to the gorge after walking up to the little church on the hill (you get to it from a path near the Old School Taverna) but don't tell Mrs Jock I was perched on the cliffs last year in order to get the photo angles I wanted :-). Eventually I reached the top of the gorge and made my way out. The real killer was then the paved road that seems to go on forever (it's probably only a few hundred yards) and is really steep. It is torturous as you can hear voices from The Old School and almost taste the cold beer with the sun is beating down on you and the steep paved incline to negotiate. I finally reached the taverna where I ordered a large cold beer and the lovely lady also brought out a large jug of water which I asked if I could wear rather than drink as I made a pouring motion over my head, to which she just smiled and pointed to the hose round the corner. I just sat enjoying the views with my cold beer whilst yet again soaking up the scene as other customers started coming in to order beers as well as order from the menu (the food at the Old School/Kafeneio sto Scholeio is fantastic as are the staff). After about half an hour I thought I better start to head back down before Mrs Jock sent out a rescue party. On the way down it was much easier to see where the cairns were and what way they were indicating to go so it was a much easier walk down. There was still a little scrambling but nothing too difficult and for footwear I was wearing well worn in proper walking sandals which were more than adequate for me. The scenery on the way down seemed even better or perhaps that was because I knew a dip in the sea was at the other end. Eventually I popped back out of the gorge at the beach area and then on to the beach where I was greeted with a beaming relieved smile from Mrs Jock.
