The Kargil War Memorial is a war memorial built by the Indian Army in the town of Dras, commemorating the 1999 Kargil War between India and Pakistan. We took the tour around the war memorial and Paid homage to the brave soldiers who gave their lives to protect our nation. The view of Tiger Hill and the Tololing Range add to the majesty of this place. It was an emotional experience hearing the stories of the soldiers. We felt proud that our Leh / Ladakh's expedition started from the Kargil War Memorial.

Located in a rugged valley between mountains over which the Line of Control (LoC) passes, the village of Hunderman was a part of Pakistan before it was taken into Indian control during the 1971 war in Gilgit-Baltistan. It is a dusty, nondescript village nestled amidst the craggy peaks of Kargil. The strategically-sensitive Himalayan hamlet has witnessed innumerable skirmishes and four wars with Pakistan including the most recent Kargil war.

Just 45 km short of Kargil on the Leh-Kargil road is a place called Mulbekh which is famous for its rock carved Buddha ( reminiscent of Bamiyan Buddha carvings in Afghanistan). It's within a small temple on the left side of the road. The carved Buddha on a rock face is of a standing Maitreya Buddha ( or Future Buddha) and is worth a stop. There are couple of restaurants on the right side of the temple where you can have tea or a soft drink.
